Blog #3 Due: Monday 2/9/15

Post the title of the book you're reading, its author, and the current page you are on.

Almost all fiction authors have to do some kind of research before they write their novels. For example, JK Rowling might have researched historical sites in London and different creatures from mythology. Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games series, might have researched different types of weapons or survival skills. The author of Twilight researched Native-American traditional stories.

Tell me something that you think your author researched before he or she wrote your novel. Explain why you choose this (how it relates to your novel). Your response must be at least 5 sentences. Remember to comment on 2 classmates.

I am reading The House of Hades by Rick Riordan and I am on Pg 328. I think that the author might have researched Greek and Roman myths and locations. I think that he researched this because the entire series is about Greek and Roman demigods. I also think that he researched locations because the book includes many ancient european locations.

I am reading The Clique by Lisi Harrison and I am currently on page 15. This book is about five girls who are the most popular, bratty girls in school. They are really mean and will destroy you (reputation wise) until they get their way. One of the characters named Kristen will insult you so bad and will embarrass until you cry. The author of this book can't really research how to be mean. But she can look up how to be mean by reading others books about mean, rich girls. Or there are some t.v. shows about girls with bratty behavior such as in Mean Girls. I choose this book because I recently read another book in the series called It's Not Easy Being Mean and I thought it was really good, so that's why I choose to read this book also.

am reading “Torn” by David Massey. I am currently on page 60. I think that David Massey researched on great techniques on how to be descriptive in his novel “Torn “. The girl well my main character “Ellie” Is faced in a very chaotic area, but this is her first time being in Afghanistan in a new world. To be exact David Massey probably had to do some great research on Afghanistan and how it is falling in love while you’re in war. David Massey has come a long way! I think so far that he probably used some good tips on how to write a novel.

the book i am currently reading is the hunger games, mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. i am currently on page 139. i think my author researched as in your blog, survival. the reason i think that is, is because of the fact that there is so much survival problems in the book. one of the many problems is not being tracked down so no fires or anything like that.

I am reading my ishmael by Daniel Quinn, and i am on page 154. The book is heavily focused on philosophy so the author probably did a lot of research on that subject. he also did a lot of research on history and misconceptions people may have of human history, since that is a major part of the book. He probably focused on Asian philosophy instead of Greek, which is very popular.

I am reading Across the Universe by Beth Revis, and I'm on page 222. My book is science fiction, so this question is actually really easy to answer. My book is about a ship heading to a new planet called "Centauri-Earth." The trip there is supposed to take three centuries, so important people who work in different fields are to be cryogenically frozen until they reach the planet. I think the most important thing my author had to research was the topic of cryogenic freezing. She also might have had to research space and astronomy.

I’m currently on page 44 of the book small as an elephant by Jennifer Richard Jacobson. I think the author of my book did research on national parks and survival skills before writing this book. The reason that I think this is because jacks went on a camping trip with his mother and they go to Acadia national park in Maine. When they live all the way in Boston. Also jack has to learn how to take care of himself now since he can’t his mother. This is where the survival skills comes in handy.

I think he use this because he writes about a kids adventure. It would have also made it more realistic and unique.

The book I am currently reading is football champion by Pat Hughes and I am currently on pg.57. The author William Shakespeare has a relationship connection because he always talks about love and emotions. My author Pat talks about the love the boy has in football and the emotion he has when he gets hurt and cant play. These to authors to me make an connection in there research and writing. All in all Pat Hughes is a great author and I look forward to reading more of his books.

I am currently on the book "The Kidnappers" by Willo Davis Roberts, and I am on pg 123. A subject that the author may have researched might be technology. I say that the author may have researched this topic because while the person is missing, the cops use different technology that Joey finds interesting. There is a special type of computer that the police use in the book. On this special computer, it has a software and keys that would help perfectly for creating a image of a criminal, like a art sketch. Using this technology Joey thinks its fascinating how close to the criminal it looks. The author may not have known about this type of technology , and she may have researched it.

I am reading "the Wide Window" by Lemony Snicket and I am on page 76. I don't think my author had to research much to make this book. The author of my book had to think for himself to come up with all of the realistic fiction events. he didn't have to research anything because he made it all up.

So the book I'm reading is Neela and I'm currently on 23. The author is writing a story about an Indian heritage you migh say. Now she is Indian, but there are some Indians that don't know there culture. So she might have studied up India in preparation for her book. Im not totally sure if its correct though since I don't know a lot about India, but I hope she has accurate information.

I am reading Chomp by Carl Hiaasen and I am on page 70. I think that the author might have researched different types of wild animals. In the book, the main characters raise many different types of animals in their very own backyard. This includes the iguana that fell on Mickey Cray's head. Most of the book revolves around various types of animals the characters have to cope with.

The book i am currently reading is catching fire BY Suzanne Collins and i am on pg 23. I think the author might have researched stuff about competing against people and challenges that can be realistic. I think that because the hunger game series is about fighting, and challenges the main character gotta face. Also think she researched some locations because the locations in the book and movie are not normal locations i seen. But the book is good so far, i like it, i recommend it.

I am reading Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz and i am on page 1, because i just started reading it. I think the author of my book might have researched spies and British agencies. I think he researched this because this book is about a British spy and finding the killers who killed his uncle "Ian". In addition, i also think they searched up British agencies because the narrator or "Alex" finds out later on that he catches himself working for "MI6" Britain's top-secret intelligence agency. And i chose this book because someone showed me this book and i was interested (i'm gonna read the whole series).

I am reading Torment by Lauren Kate and I am on page 237. I think the author on my book would have researched traditional stories about reincarnation in order to get the story of how Luce got reincarnated so many times. She also might have researched stories about angels. The book is based on Luce, a regular girl who has been reincarnated a lot so she can be with her boyfriend Daniel. Daniel and a lot of Luces friends that went to the same school are all angels. That is why she would have to research stories about reincarnation and angels.

I am reading If I Stay by Gayle Forman and I am currently on page 130. I believe the author, Gayle Forman, would have had to especially research music. In this book music is a key part to the characters. Also there are so many different composers and types of music mentioned. She probably had to not only research these different composers and genres but also listen to them with a musical ear. I say this because she goes into great detail about many different aspects of certain pieces of music.

I am currently reading “Flush” by Carl Hiaasen and am on page 146. I think the author did research on the Keys and South Florida water sources. This book takes place in the Keys and the water gets human waste due to a boat dumping it in the water. On the back of the book it says that Hiaasen used to live in Florida and that means he was probably familiar with that type of water sources. The author does a good job at describing what the water looks like and where it is.

Rraisch6 Great job on your blog.!

I'm reading I am Number Four and I'm on page 114. I think that my author had to research the geography and lifestyles of people living around different parts of the US. The main character's home changes so frequently that I would think he had to research the different kind of life he'd live depending on where the character moved next. For example, when the main character moves from Florida to Ohio, his whole life changes including his school, environment, and home. In Ohio instead of living on a small beach house like in Florida, the main character moves to a large farm house close to his highschool.

JPerkins5 said...

@wsammel6 Riordan is a great author, I'm sure that book is really good. I'm sure he had to research mythology and Greece a lot too.

I'm reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and I've finished it. I don't believe that the author had to do much studying to write it because at the time he was writing the book it was a modern realistic fiction. But he might have had to study, for the character of Lennie, on the mentally challenged so he didn't make him seem believable. Other than that I cant think of any reason that he would have to study to write the book.

I also belive he woould have looked up Jacosta stones or else he wouln't have known about them at all.

I am currently on page 330 the last page of the book Flawless by Sara Shepard. Something that my author might have researched could be stalking, or like how to text, email, and break into someones house. The reason I think that the author might have researched that is because its a mystery type book. Meaning that she made a character that no one knows who it really is. That person is called "A". "A" knows everything about the four main characters of the book, Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily. "A" is always texting, and emailing them and when they tried blocking "A", "A" just broke into their lockers and houses and wrote them notes. "A" also tends to send them letters. "A" sent a letter to Aria's mom, Ella and told her all about her dad, Bryon's affair. So it seems like you would have to know a little bit about that stuff to be able to wrote a book like this.

The book I’m reading is called Perfect Season by Tim Green and I’m on page 145. One thing that I think the author might have researched is some football plays. The author did play in the NFL but he was a defensive end so I think he might have had to look up some offensive plays. This relates to my book because the whole book is about two 8th graders trying to make it on a high school football team. The two boys are both on the offensive side of the ball so that’s why I think the author might have had to look up some football plays.

Also, the author might have read a lot of books about teenager drama because there are some dramas in this book.

I am currently reading The Big Time by Tim Green and I am on page 63. In this book there is a girl named Tate who is the kicker for the football team. I think maybe he had to research something about female kickers. He also could have looked up something about lawyers because Troy's father is a lawyer. One more thing he could have looked up was just like what bamitchell2 said, the author was a defensive end so he might have looked up offensive plays because Troy is an offensive player. But other than that, I don't think he had to look up anymore things because one, he played football, and two, he based the character's personalities off of his own children.

Asia for its snowy mountains and a couple of clothing that is used and related to in the story. A royalty family which Europe has. A bunch of different kingdoms or countries like Europe has. Each kingdom or country having their own specific environment. Also the map it has in the begging looks a lot like Europe.

Moreover, I also think that my author researched about old sailor stories because, the story is about a boy who wanted to be a sailor when he grew up, and his father was a sailor who always stayed on his boat, I would think that would've gotten some ideas from older stories. I think that the author would have also needed to research technology. This is because one of the characters is a hacker and the characters sometimes talk about what she is doing in ways that someone would have to research to understand.

I am reading 13 Hangmen by Art Corriveau and I ma currently on page 130. This book is about how a boy named Tony who goes back in the future to see the best times in history. Tony goes back in time and has a lot of baseball memories. So, I am pretty sure that he probably looked up memorable times in the history of baseball. He probably looked up popular baseball players at the time such as, Ted Williams.

Currently I am reading Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rawlings and I am on page number 420 and I believe that the author would have to research many things, like how people generally acted during the time period that Harry Potter takes place. She would also learn about mythological creatures like Gryphons and Phoenixes. She would need to see how each of these wonderful creatures acted, how they would have moved, like if they galloped or actually ran. Also she would have to go through many different cultures mythological creatures when incorporating another batch of wizards from a different historical background.

@SHenderson4 - excellent post!

@wsammel6 - I have read that book, it's pretty amazing

I'm currently reading "My brother is a big fat lier" by James Patterson. I think my author did research on entertainment and how to write young-adult fiction becaus his books are funny and fictional. Also he holds the Guinness record for the most #1 New York Times bestsellers of any author. Which means his books are entertaining.

I am currently reading Million Dollar throw by Mike Lupica, and I am on page 65. Mr. Lupica would have had to research the New England Patriots. The reason why is because the main character, Nate, is a huge New England fan, and he talks about everyone on there team. Also everyone calls Nate "Brady" as in Tom Brady because that is his favorite player, they play the same position, and both have the same number. Again Mike Lupica would have had to do a lot of research on the New England Patriots.

The book I am currently reading is “Legend” by Marie Lu I am currently on page 197. I feel my author researched slums or ghetto because the setting of my book is in a poor part of town. The characters in it don’t have much money and have no place to live. You only see that stuff in the slums not in the city. There are hobos at every corner in this book.

I am currently reading "Ender's game" by Orson Scott Card, and I am on page 313. This book is about war in the future against aliens, and it is really interesting. I think that Orson Scott Card searched up science fiction weapons before he wrote this story. I chose that because there are really weird futuristic guns in the book. It relates to the book because they use guns that are futuristic and hard to just think of off the top of your head.

I am reading the book pretty ugly by Karyn Langhorne Folan and I am currently on page 95. I think the author of my book may have researched how the life of teenagers was. By that I mean I think that she might have went to a school (a high school) and watched the students and see what happens. I choose this because It relates to my novel. It relates because the book is about high school and how they treat each other and how people feel left out and stuff so that’s how it relates to my novel.

I am reading "flush" by Carl Hiaasen, I am currently on page 89. I think that for my book the author may have searched things on boats, like types of boats and what they are worth. I think he researched this because in the book it tells various types of boats that people own, and how much the boat was worth that the dad sunck. I also think he reaserched rules and reglulations for jail because in the story the dad is in jail and the guards are very specific on what they can and cannot allow in a jail.

I am reading "Do Not Pass Go" by: Kirkpatrick Hill. I am on page 66. I think my author would have to researched mechanics and how small family mechanic buildings look. Unless they grew up living and working in an environment where being around places like a mechanics workshop would show the details i mind. They would have to look this up because the author described the inside of the workshop so precisely, they added the gleaming of the sun from oil on the cans. Thats a lot of detail to me because to add every little detail takes a lot of time to work on and this author dedicates the time for the book.

I say this because The protagonist Serena who is not in anyway spanish, has a friend (Elijah) who speaks it fluently. The only reason he does this is because thier in the same spanish class. So she may have had to learn or research the language in order to be correct.

I am currently reading "What the Dog Said" by Randi Reisfeld, I am on page 193. I believe the author might have investigated about detectives and mysteries. I beleive it because the book is about a girl that lost his because he was shot and he was a detective. Maybe he also researched laws or dog training also the writer might like dogs. Grace is training a shelter dog because she was so dreppessed that she was locked in her room and her grades were bad a's to F's.

I'm reading Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, and I am on page 118. From what I have read so far I believe Brian Selznick probably researched about train stations. I would think that because the whole story takes place in a train station. It's about a boy who's mom passed away, and his dad lives with him in the back of the train station clock. Then, his dad leaves and never comes back; so he has to learn all this clockwork to keep the clocks in the train station working. Then, later in the story he rebuilds this really complicated machine that only uses clockwork that leads him back to his dad.

I am reading The Finisher by David Baldacci and am on page 32.I think the author searched for things such things as dictatorship and things like that. For example, in the book the land they live in has a very unreasonable ruler. I also think he researched evil government life styles. For example, the government in the book is very unfair and tends to screw people over.

I am currently reading cover-up by john Feinstein and I am on page # 71. This book is about an well known event called the Super Bowl. I don't think that the author needed any research for this kind of story. This is something that anybody could do without any research. The only thing that might be needed to know about is what events happen in a half time or other things like that.

I think he did his research on local kids because my main character is a kid who travels a lot and he settle in a small town and had no friends but had a secret talent. Or he could’ve did his research on the NFL because he could’ve got the football format overall from the NFL play style.

The book that I am currently reading is called homesick by Kelly Klice, and I am correctly on page 101. The book is very interesting and very well detailed. In order to make such a book the author would have to do lots of thinking, readin, and much more. In this book I think that the author had to do lots of research, on children that were homesick. Homesick: the distress or impairment caused by an actual or anticipated separation from home. Its cognitive hallmark is preoccupying thoughts of home and attachment objects. If you have ever felt this way before, you have been homesick.

I'm reading The Kill Order by James Dashner I'm on page 51. I think my author researched diseases and survival skills before writing the novel. I chose this because when an outbreak of military looking people on this thing called a berg they were shooting darts filled with a highly cautious and dangerous disease. The disease pretty much killed people instantly also. I believe he also researched survival skills because two characters in the story by the names of Mark and Trina have to keep trying to survive what they call the sun flare. Also they have to find ways to avoid the disease which is also a survival skill (kind of).

I'm currently reading the second book in the Brotherband series by John Flanagan and I'm currently on page 150. John Flanagan would have had to research a boats build and terms used on the boat. He would have to do this research because most of the story revolves around ships. Thus he would have to look up ship handling terms and how a boat was made. If he didn't know how to say what right was in ship speak he would have a whole bunch of angry boa loving fans!

I am currently done with my book Daniel X by James Patterson. The author of my book writes about aliens so he probably researched a thing or two. I think James Patterson most likely researched some things said about aliens like; sightings and pseudoscience. By pseudoscience I mean the people who believe aliens are real and attempt to convince others they are. This relates to my book mainly because if you haven't guessed already its about aliens.
