Blog #8 Due: Monday 10/22/12

We just learned about abstract nouns and how they help you determine the theme in a text.
For this week's blog entry, tell us one of the themes of your independent reading book and then turn it into a theme statement.
If you need help, use the graphic organizer we used to analyze the theme of the video clips from, "My So Called Life." You can also ask yourself "What did I(or the character) learn?"
Do not forget to comment on 2 classmates posts.

anger, because in the story the main charter has a anger problem and in the end he gets over it.

My theme of my book is control. My characters are always pushing each other too far! They argue all the time, yell at each other, and just like to pick fights. Then they start to control themselves for their own health and relationship through out the book.

I am reading a book called The Journal of Ryan The Ghost Machine. The theme of the book is to just tell your parents. He tries to hide his feelings and friends from his parents and when they find out they get mad. He had many chances to tell his parents about the adventures he went on at night but didn't. He thought they,d get mad at him about it. Come to find out they were even more mad about his hidden life when they found out themselves.

lmiller2
You were supposed to get the theme of your book and the idea was to help you find it.

nhamilton2 said...

irivera2
That sounds like a book with a lot of tension in it.

I just started my new book call re- vamped by Sienna Mercer. There hasn’t really been a real theme yet but, that everyone should always be reunited with their family. As the characters grow up they learn to keep their family together. The two characters can never be apart. This book is amazing so far.

LMiller2
Be more descriptive.

IRivera2
You really have theme dowm.

My book is called The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I am done with the book. One theme that this book has is "friendship". The theme statementin my book could be theres nothing in life worth more then friendship. Another one could be boyfriends and girlfriends may leave you but friends are always there.

My book is STILL "The Son of Neptune" by Rick Riordan. I'm on page 185. One theme is bravery. A theme statement could be you'll never know if you don't try. In my book, the characters have to be brave and step up in order to accomplish their task.

llambert6 said...

@LMiller2
You could be more descriptive but over all that's a good theme.

llambert6 said...

@IRivera2
Sounds like the typical teenager...

I am currently finished with the book Where I Belong By Gwendolyn Heasley. The main theme of the book is that whenever you have something that turns your life around, let it change you, because it can take you to a different chapter of your life. The main character, Corrine learned that she loves it in Texas rather than New York. When Corinne first arrived at Texas, she was filled with anger, which is the abstract noun.Another reason this book would represent change is because a rich girl comes from New York to Texas and leaves her heart there forever.

I read Unwind by Neal Shusterman and I have finished the book. The theme of my book is courage. The characters have to have the courage to run away and try to reach their goal, which is not give up on staying alive. Connor and Risa had the courage to leave their homes in hope of staying alive. Lev also had the courage to try to stay alive when he was separated from Connor and Risa. This book helped me learn that you have to have courage to reach your goals.

zotto5 said...

jphan2- That sounds like a good book.

nhamilton- You did a good job with the blog.

I have finished The Maze Runner by James Dashner. There are 385 pages in that book. The theme of the book is survival. That is because the main character has to survive in a dangerous maze. Its like a city thing.

The theme of the book I am currently reading which is Bluford High Summer Secrets the theme is trust. The author is Paul Langan.That’s the theme because the sisters have a lot of trust in each other and if it wasn’t for their trust they wouldn’t really have anything. Also it tells a lot about their trust in this book. This book makes you want to find someone and your life that you can really trust and it’s just a really good book.

jexley6 said...

The theme of my book, Artemis Fowl The Opal Deception, is probably bravery, because he goes on a lot of adventures and has to help save the world from fairies and humans colliding.

I am almost finished with my book the Da Vinci Code, by:Dan brown. i am on page 120. I think the theme is expect the worst. With the curators torture death, the mesteriouse note, and the torture the enmy doesn to himself religeous wise is horrifying. If your wondering how the curator died it's like this. The enemy comes in (i cant find what he's called they refer him as a man or the man that robbed the louv'e) So yea he comes in with a pistol, theres a gate seperating him and the curator, the curator gets shot, and the bullet hits him just above his stomach but just below this diaphram. So first he gets shot, then his stomach acid burns his internal organs and bores a hole on his skin in the chest regeion and since the bullet hit the diachram the acid rises up, and he chokes on pure acid that erodes his throute and intence bleeding. It goes on for 20 minutes. So back to theme. This has to do with theme because Robert langdon finds out in a picture and he knows theis guy is bad but he thinks if he did that to the curator then he can expect the worst when he sees him.

cdayawon-bobbitt said...

@IRivera2

My book is The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan. I am finished with book. The theme of the book is triumph. One of the main characters had to overcome many obstacles along the way. For example, Grover sets out to find Pan(the cloven god) for him to help save the Earth from pollution, and he has to do this before the Cloven Elders revoke his explorer's licence. Grover ended up finding Pan and completed his mission, because of this he manages to keep his explorer's licence.

The book that I read was HOOT by Carl Hiaasen. I finished the book. The character learned to stand up for what you believe in even if it means standing alone. Roy used to be a nobody and know he is a somebody because he stands up for what he thinks is right. He saved a bunch of burrowing owls from their death fighting for a cause.

awilson6 i have seen he movie is the book any good by the way good post.

dsmith5 that is a great post good words

I just finished Swindle by Gordon Korman. One theme this book has is friendship. A theme statement could be “always be there for your friends.” I learned in this book that no matter what’s going on I n your life you can always get through it with a good friend. This was a great book that tought me many lessons.

ssuskin5 said...

I am reading Speak, pg.175
The theme of my book is trust. The main character does not trust anyone causing other people not to trust her. Also causing friendships to break and more drama to start. My theme statement would be, Trust is important for friendship.

ssuskin5 said...

@IRivera
What book are u reading?

ssuskin5 said...

@llambert6
Wow, u haven't finished the book yet?

I was reading It’s Raining Cupcakes. The theme of my book was to not give up. Isabel’s mom was opening a cupcake shop and kept feeling discouraged by a famous brownie shop that was opening nearby. So everyone in her family went through trouble to get her cheered up. Like setting up an interview and painting a mural in her shop.

mruvio6 said...

IRivera you can definitley tell that's the theme.

mruvio6 said...

LMiller2 good theme but you should have included a little more.

mflippen6 said...

I am reading 1984, by George Orwell. I am on page 17. Although I am only in the first chapter, if I had to choose an abstract noun to describe the book, it would be conformity. Everyone loves Big Brother, which is the nickname of the dictator that controls the government. So far, although I have not read much, the theme of the book is: Do not conform to a society you do not agree with.

mflippen6 said...

ssuskin5
I heard that's a good book.

mflippen6 said...

OPanchal5
The Maze Runner is awesome.

mquinn6 said...

One theme in the book The lost hero by Rick Riordan is self confidence. Because in the book each character is having trouble with their confidence. Jason is scared that he isn't brave enough to do the quest to save Hera(queen of all goods and marriage). Piper is not confident on people liking her for who she is. Also Leo having trouble with his fire powers and lost of mother.

mquinn6 said...

IRivera2 aka Rivera good job on explaining theme

mquinn6 said...

LMiller2 need more facts on why the theme is the theme

@LMiller2 Malik is right, use more facts.
@DBlair6 I like it bro, keep it up.

My noun is maturity. As the main character struggled through High School, he wanted to follow his dad into the military. His friends thought otherwise. His dream was to fight in the Vietnam war, but his buddies disagreed. No matter the less, they all join the war and fufil their destinies. I recommend this book to everyone. Very dramatic and touching.

EPata2 said...

The book I have just completed is called Bound. It is by Donna Jo Naopoli. The abstract noun that would describe this book is dedication. A theme statement that could come from this is "Sometimes you have to do everything others to show your true colors." This is because in the book Xing Xing does everything for her sister, but in the end, Xing Xing is the one who really wins.

EPata2 said...

@awilson06

sounds like a good book

The theme of my book is finding yourself. My character, Corliss, is very intelligent and kind of dorky. She's not the type of girl to be on set of a new to-be hit tv show, but her uncle sets her up for an internship to be an assistant for possibly the most needy director in hollywood, who pretends to know everything about directing, but is really only finding himself also. At the end, alot of characters realize who they really want to be. And turn themselves around. I think the theme statement is "To find yourself, you must branch out of your comfort zone."

mlennon6 said...

@irivera2 That doesnt sound fun, but interesting.

@nhamilton2 Sounds pretty cool.

My book is Secret of Red Gate Farm by Carolyn keene. I'm on page 61. An abstract noun for my book is motivation. The theme in this part of the book is don't give up. Nancy tries really hard to get information from this case. Its really hard for her because she has to find fresh news to get somewhere in the case. She learns no matter how hard don't give up.

yalvarez6 said...

ADavis2, it sounds like a book I read in 5 grade. Good blog.
Kaduprepong, I read that boy in the stripped pjs and that's the same theme I thought the book had when I read it good job.

zbauer5 said...

I was reading the Giver by Lois Lowry. The theme is the allure of a perfect society, because everything seems perfect but it really isn't. The main character Jonas runs away because he learn his parents don't love him and they were going to kill his "adopted" brother. He has to go through a lot of pain to escape. He knows he can't give up.

The book I am currently reading is a light in the attic by shel silverstein . This is a poetry book so it has lots of themes. One is that you should care about your family as much as yourself. Because if you don’t you might end up loosing one or the other. The book is mostly about entertaining you , and it does a good job at it.
Hrivera2 I have that book at home!
Mlayne2 is it like the movie??

i am now finished with my book. i would say my theme would be courage.i picked this theme because this guy had to make some life depending decisions and it took a lot of courage to do this. in his life he always had it easy and never had to call such hard shots. and he realizes that he needs to be more serious.

Dmcknight2 said...

In the book Eragon the theme is friendship. And how friendship can conquer almost anything. I picked this theme because the way the boy and the dragon stuck together was I liked the book so much. It was a good fantasy book. It was way better than the movie.

The book that I am reading is called “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway
And I am on page 41. The theme of my book is when you get knocked down,
You get back up again. I choose this theme because whenever the old man go fishing,
It is almost impossible for him to catch anything. But every day he keeps trying and trying
Even if he know that it is hopeless.
