Blog #9 Due: Monday 3/26/12

We have been focusing on poetry and trying to figure out what the author is trying to say through his or her writing. Tell us what you think the Theme of your book is. Remember: Theme is the point the author is trying to get across to the reader.

Remember to include your books title, author, and current page number you are on. Your response must include what you think the Theme of your book is and an example from the book that clues you in to that theme. Your response must be 5-7 sentences.

I was reading Wolf Rider by Avi. I am currently done witht the book. The book is about a kid named Andy trying to find a potential murderer. The book has no obvious theme included. I'd say since Andy is always getting in trouble that the theme is "don't stick your nose in other people's business".

Im reading The Summer I learned To Fly by Dana Reinhardt and im on page 81. I think that the theme is coming out of your shell and being open minded sort of. The book is realy slow, so its hard to pick a theme. The main character Drew is always talking about how she has no friends, and then she meets a guy named Emmet, and i guess she becomes more social and open.

Im reading Dear John by Nicholas Sparks im currently on page 37. The theme of my book is probably courage because the book is about john going off to war and hes trying to keep the love of his life while he is there and he needs courage. One of the examples are when Svannah waits for John while hes at war but then 9/11 strikes and John has to choose between love and country.

The book that I am currently reding is Touch Blue. The page number that I am on is page 101. The author is Cythia Lord. The theme that the author is trying to say is that never jujde a booj by its cover. Because at first Tessie did not like Aron because how he aked for the first two days. Then later on he turned up to be Tessie's best friend.

i am currently Reading Black Duck By Janet Taylor Lisle. I am also on page 137 I think the point of this book would be to explain the crimes of dealers. they would smuggling liquor and other types of alcohol. It also tells us about the story of a murder too.

@rjacobs2 my book has murders too

@tfried2 sounds like a bad book

I am currently reading the book Killer a pretty little lairs series I am almost done I have like 10 pages left! The theme that the author is putting across is don't tell a lie, because it will only hurt you more and its more things to cover up. Also you never know who your true friends are along with don't trust anyoe because it never leaves you out with good. Like how Aria told her friend what is happending with her and Mr.Fitz and now A knows.

I just finished reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. One theme is that family comes first. Katniss' younger sister Prim was called for the reaping and she was a tribute in the Hunger Games. Katniss loves her sister so much that she volunteered as Tribute when her sisters name was called. It shows that no matter what the circumstance she will do anything for her family that she loves. Also she always breaks the law by going hunting and this is only for her family so she can keep them alive.

Spena6\ said...

rjacobs2
That theme can go on in our life. People shouldn't go in other peoples buisness.

lmartinez5
I love that movie so much!! It is so sad what he picks and what she picks.

I am currently reading Michael Phelps by Michal Phelps with Alan Abrahamson. I am currently on page 25. The author is trying to send the message that you shouldn't let disabilities in life slow you down. They give an example when they explain how sucessful Michael Phelps has become and he was born with ADHD. So even with a disibility he was able to make it big in life.

The theme of Ron Howard is you get get anywhere in life without friends. This is the theme becasue his dad was a director and so ron fell into acting. he wouldnt have any money right now if his dad didnt make him act. Although he did alwas want to be an actor,he wanted to be a photographer. Eve n though he forfilled anougher dream of being a director..

i am currently reading the guinness book of world records 2012 gamers edition by the guinness world records company. i am on no particular page. there is no real theme in my book, as it is a guinness book of world records. if there is one it would be "don't give up" as the winners of the records in the book worked very hard to get them. also, in the starcraft section, it says training for starcraft tournaments requires playing for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week.

metroidman97(chunt6) said...

jdiehl6 why is that series so popular?

metroidman97(chunt6) said...

wlawrence6 i take it you're reading an autobiography

MRichards5 said...

The title of my book is Hate That Cat, and I'm done with the book. The theme of my book is that even the things you hate in life can change your view on not only them, but on everything else, and you may actually end up loving them.

MRichards5 said...

@Imartinez5

I've heard good things about that boooooook.

weird theme. xD

I just not even 24 hours ago finished the phenomenal book The Hunger Games.By Suzanne Collins. Just so you all know it's great great book. after reading the book I think the theme is to stand up for what's right, even when your life is in danger. Society may be wrong, but you will go down fighting. Its also all about mind over matter.

Setherland5 said...

I am reading Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and am currently on page 23. The theme of my book is that growing up is tough, but don't ever give up. I think this is the theme because in my book, a girl kills herself because of all the rumors and things that happen to her. I have just started the book but the narrator has said more than once to himself, "why did you do it Hannah? you still had a future. You could have talked to me and I would have gotten you through things." He is technically talking to himself but i think this is actually talking to everyone who is considering suicide.

Snetherland5 said...

Jdiehl6,
Which book is that in the series?

Snetherland5 said...

That book is so good and sad!:(

SJun2 said...

I have finished reading Inheritance by Christopher Paolini today. I don't really think that the book has any themes since the author wrote the book ofr entertainment purposes. If I can think of one it would be that if you are willing to work hard enough, you can achieve what the others claim impossible. I say that because Eragon was able to defeat Galbatorix when countless others had failed to do so. Galbatorix also managed to find the name of the ancient language even when it was lost for a very long time.

SJun2 said...

rjacobs2, Wolf Rider sounds similar to the Dragon Rider in the book I have read.

SJun2 said...

The book i am reading is Nikola Tesla, Spark of a Genius. The books theme is the life and achievements of Nikola Tesla. This is shown throughout the entire book. for example, the events are placed in chronological order from his birth in Europe to his death in New York City and all he did in between.

aneal2 said...

The book i am currently reading is November Blues. This book is by Sharon M. Draper. The theme of this book is "Love it while you can because one day you could lose it." An example is when November finds out that josh is dead and she is prenant she wishes that he was alive so they could raise the baby together. But she was confused if she loved him or the thought of how he was. I am on page 41.

aneal2 said...

jdennis5: I love that book.

The book I was reading was The Help by Kathryn Sockett. I am just finished the book a feew days ago. The author is trying to tell us that segregation is not good and everyone should be treated the same way. I know this because all of the white ladies in this story have treated all of the blacks in a bad way. Also this is a historical book.

awilson2 said...

The book I am currently reading is "A Matter of Trust" by Anne Schraff. I am on page 28. I think the theme of my book is that no matter who comes and tries to ruin something that means most to you, you should keep trying and make something good of bad. I think the theme is this because Darcy is dating someone she really truly likes and Brisana comes and tries to take him away from her. Darcy keeps trying though.

jdennis5 said...

lmartinez did a wonderful job on explaning the theme of here book!

abeatty5 said...

My book is tentacles by kate falls. I am done with it currently. The point the author is trying to make is that people should be more interested in krypteds. Because in the book wolfe the unckle has an addiction to going after giant squids, dinsaur eggs and more. I realy liked this book because it sounds like it is fiction but it is not. People in real life do this for a living.

I just finished reading Mia Hamm's Biography. There are many themes of my book but one is to always try your beset. Mia Hamm was always the first practice and the last to leave. Another one is to never let your talents get to your head because its never good to be too cocky, and Mia was always humble. One last theme is that anything is possible, because when Mia was only 14, scouts were already looking at her to put on colleges teams. Mia was known as one of the best soccer players of all times.

The book I am currnetly reading is Dork Diaries:Tales from a Not So Popular Party Girl.It is by Rachel Renee Russell. I am on page 74.I think the theme is "you don't have to be popular for people to like you." In the book the main character Nikki, she's not so popular so she doesn't have many friends. Then she has a crush on this boy named Brandon. She is afraid he will not go out with her because she's not popular. The popular girl, MacKenzie is trying to steal Brandon away because she is popular.

I'm reading max by James Patterson. and I'm on page 134. I think think the theme is never give up. I think this because in the book they are always moving and having to fight bad guys. But, they never give up no matter how bad things end up. That is why I think the theme is never give up.

LRICHEY6 said...

wlawrence6 i have ADHD too its not that bad people always say it is though.

I just finished the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The theme from my book seems to be love conquers all because the entire story Katniss is able to keep going on her love for others. For example, her overall drive to win the Hunger Games, a deathly competition, is to come back and see her little sister Prim and her mother. She loves her sister so much she volunteered as tribute when her sister was picked as a tribute for District 12. Katniss offered herself for her sister at the reaping, a lottery to see who would compete, to practically die in the Hunger Games.

The book that I am finishing up is the Guardian by Nicholous Sparks. The theme is "Love has second chances." It is kinda hard about picking a theme for this book because it has so many twists and turns. In my book the main character is very upset about loseing her husband but then she meets two other guys that gave her a second chance.

AStephens5 said...

I am currently reading the book,Mockingjay. The author is Suzanne Collins. i am on page 23 and I just recently started it like two days ago. This is the last book in the series, The Hunger Games. The theme, I believe, is to always expect the unexpected.Like in the Hunger Games two people won instead of one and nobody expected that. And through the series different things, events, come into play that nobody expects. Like after the first book a whole crisis was occuring because Peeta and Katniss both won.

I am done reading The Associate, by John Grisham. The theme would probably be dont keep secrets. Because somehow people will know if you did something wrong. Just like in my book.Wen his life was so great but then some FBI agents blackmailed him.

pdixon6 said...

My book is Everlost by Neal Shusterman Im on page 170. I think the theme is not only what might happen after death but also that you must do anything for your friends or youll be forever alone. You see they are all dead a.k.a the life after death part, and Allie goes through all this trouble to save her friends the fate she had caused them. She fights the Haunter and the McGill. I dont know how it turns out yet I hope to know soon.

I am currently on the second book of the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire. I think that the theme of the entire story is never give up. Katniss goes through situations where she could severely be injured, but she keeps going and keeps pushing through because she believes in herself and told Prim that she would win.

I recently finished Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. I think the theme of my book is leadership. I say this because katniss has to lead the other districts to rebel against the capitol. Sometimes she does that just by talking to the districts. Or fighting along side them.

tfried2 said...

AStephens5: i finished it a few minutes ago and i kind of didn't like the ending.

JHouston6 said...

My book is A series of Unfortunate Event: Tha e Bad Beginning,by Lemony Snickett. I am currently on page 20. I think the theme of my book is that families should always stick together, especially when tragedy strikes. This is because in my book, the Baudelaire children lose their parents in a fire that destroys their entire mansion, but the Baudelaires stick together and never quarel with, or mistrust eachother.

JHouston6 said...

I just finished Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
The theme of my book is to not think about things less important than your main goal. If you fllow this golden rule of doing important taks first. Your side jobs may be completed for you as rewards for your good deeds. In the book Perc saves his mom by doing a task that was not set on first priority in his mind but to everyone else is. Which is an important decision

bbedell6 said...

I'm currently reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and I'm on page 119. The theme of the book is you never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option. I believe that this is the theme because Katniss Everdeen, the main character, has never had to fend for herself until her father dies and she is the only one capable of providing for every family member. She quickly learns that she must take her father's place, and in due time, her sister, Prim's name gets called in the reaping. Katniss quickly, instinctively takes her place and learns once more how much strength she really has.

Mwilliams6 said...

Dbenjamin6,

astine2 said...

The book i am reading is Blood on my Hands, by Todd Strausser. I am currently on page 144. I think the theme of this book is to never underestimate what people are capable of. When Callie is suspected of murder, everyone thinks she actually did it. In reality, she did not do it, but one of her friends supposedly had. She doesnt know which friend was capable of murder. She also did not know what the motive could have been for someone to kill the person. She feels as if everyone is against her, and maybe everyone is.

astine2 said...

lmartinez5;
is it very similar to the movie? i know a lot of books that are somewhat different than the movies.

astine2 said...

nburke5;
that sounds like it would be an interesting book, how long is it?

Khaldeman2 said...

The book that I am currently reading is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I think that the theme in this book would be don't get to close to your opponents because it will be harder in the end. For example, in the book while Katniss and Peeta are at the capital, Katniss decides she will try to have as little as possible to do with Peeta because if it comes down to just them to it will be to heartbreaking to kill him. This book is very addicting and an easy read.Currently I am on page 106.

Khaldeman2 said...

JHouston6, That sounds like such a sad experience, hope your enjoying the book anyway.

Khaldeman2 said...

RJacobs2, your book sounds so suspenseful. I think I might read it soon.

Amanibusan6 said...

I am currently on page 230 of The Tinkerer’s Daughter, by Jamie Sedgwick. I think the theme is that even if you’re little, you can do big things. Breeze is a little girl that is a half breed of a wood elf and a human. The humans and the wood elves have been at war for a very long time, so they despise each other. Tinker has warned Breeze to keep her ears under her hat, because people will criticize her if they see her elf ears. But even though she is little, she tries to make peace between the humans and elves; therefore she does a big thing.

My book I recently read is farewell to manzanar. It is written by jeane wakastuki. I think the theme is how the book shows the circumstances the japenese people went through during world war2. She also is trying to state what her family went through. For ex, the dad got arrested for nothing, just because he is japenese.

ezuy6 said...

I just finihed Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.I think that the theme is that you never know what happend in your life. You can't be sure in future. And you should think of the effects that can happened because of your actions.

I just finished Iron Thunder. The author is Avi. I believe the theme of my book is wars don't lead to anything but death. I chose this theme because the main characters dad is sent to fight in the civil war to make money for his family, and he is killed the first month in. In other words the author's lesson is fighting does not solve anything, and you will eventually get hurt.

dmedyk6 said...

@rjacobs2 Is your book a mystery book?

She did go on to be a pro surfer.

I'm reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by: J.K. Rowling and I'm just into the first couple pages of it. I think that theme of the book is going to be that unexpected things can happen. Also, your life can drastically change at any moment. I think that theses are the themes of the book because in the book, Harry discovered that he was a wizard, which he would have never expected to happen. Also, him being a wizard drastically changes his life and flips it upside down, mainly for the better.

I'm reading the book of time by Guillaume Prevost and I'm on page 9. I think the theme of this book is that there can always be something missing in your life. Like how the character was going to his tourney for martial arts and how he looks back to see why his dad has not came back from a buisness trip. He realizes that he must be somewhere but as soon as he realizes that the tourney is cancelled. He goes back to his dad shop in order to find his dad because he thinks he would be usually back. However I was not able to get that far into the book but thats all I know from the book so far.

My book is the False Prince. Im on page 145. The author is Jennifer A. Nielsen. The theme is survival of the fittest. Because a man captures three men and they see who is the smartest and strongest. in the book they see who is most like a prince so its quet entertaining.

ASellers5 said...

The book I'm reading is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.I'm on page 169. The book has no obvious theme. The group of 6 trusted starclan and went to the sundrown place. Midnight is a badger. Midnight tells them that the forest is going to be destroyed. The book I just finished reading is called Bloodrose by Andrea Cremer. I think the theme of the book is even though the enemy is bigger, if you work as a team you can defeat almost anything. An example is when Calla, as a wolf, tried to defeat a bear shape shifter, her pack helped her take it down. Another example is when the team of Searchers fought against the Keepers even if they didn't have as strong of powers. There many other examples too like when the wolfs fought the panthers.

lmartinez5,
That sounds like a really good book and it also sounds sad.
