Blog #8 Due: Monday 10/24/11

We just learned about abstract nouns and how they help you determine the theme in a text.
For this week's blog entry, tell us one of the themes of your independent reading book and then turn it into a theme statement.
If you need help, use the graphic organizer we used to analyze the theme of the video clips from, "My So Called Life." You can also ask yourself  "What did I(or the character) learn?"

Remember to tell us what book you are reading, the author, and what page you are currently on!

I'm currently reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. So far, it's an action packed book and it keeps getting better. I'm about half way done and I don't want it to end. An abstract noun in my book might be courage, because all of the characters in the book and are young and growing so they are trying to find courage and strength to overcome obstacles. Another abstract noun could be danger, because of the war between the Socs and the greasers.

i am reading flush and it is a book with alot of ups and downs.I think that the books theam is adventure. Because it tells you to not belive everything that you hear from other people.also it also has alot of action in the book also. but that is what the theam of my book is.

I'm reading the Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan. I'm around page 90. A few abstract nouns for this book are creative and determination. I would say creative because the book is very clever in the way that the gods and goddesses of Greek Mythology come to life and the author gives them each a personality. Also, they are determined to find their best friend Annabeth after she was thrown off a cliff by a monster, but definitely didn't die because she has magical powers and her mom is Athena.

Jdewitt6,
I absolutly love that book, I didn't want to put it down either.

Sbouge2,
I would completely agree that the abstract nouns of the story are creativity and determination.

I am reading Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson i am on page 181. An abstrct noun muight be strength because the main charactere Isabel has to go through so much that she needs to be strong to live. I have learned about the Revolutionary War and about slavery. I really don't want it to end, but I want to know what happens and if she overcomes all the obstacles by her strength.

The book you are reading sounds really interesting, i could probably learn about that war.

I really like Rick Riodans books, he is very creative. I love how the book teaches you about the Gods and Godesses. I would like to read all his books.

In my book, Firestar's Quest by Erin Hunter, and although I finished the book I really like the theme. An abstract noun for this book might be strength, since all of what was done in this book is out of the pure will of some cats to rebuild something impossible.

The Outsiders was a good book with a good message, I should read it again.

I am currently reading harry potter and the deathly hallows by J.K rowling. It is so far slow but its getting better. So far Im on page 254 out of 759 since yesterday. The abstract noun I could choose is courage because my characters are full of it. Another abstract noun is strength all of my chararcters have to be mentaly strong.

I'm currently reading the book, Someone Like You, by Sarah Dessen. So far, the book is really good. It kind of puts you in a melancholy moodd in the beginning, because Scarlett's boyfriend, Michael, passes away. An abstract noun in my book would be bravery. Scarlett had to face the loss of a loved one, who she really did love, and she didn't mourn over it forever, she told herself that she was going to be okay and she was really brave. Another abstract noun would be love. Without Halley's love towards Scarlett, or Halley's mom's love towards Halley, the book would be very different.

anichols2 said...

I am currently readin gTurtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm. I am currently on page 103 of my book. The theme would probrobly be faith becasue she had always had faith. Faith will get you anywhere you want to go or do.

jdewitt6,
I think you're absolutely right. All of the characters, have to have courage to survive in the part of the town that they live in. I hope you're liking the book! The end's a tearjerker, so hang in there!

I'm currently reading Warriors:The sight by Erin Hunter and on page 50. Its a book with lots of adventure, action, and a little drama. An abstract noun I can describe for this is "discipline" cause in most parts the three main characters get in trouble for breaking a law or "warrior code" as it says in the book. The three main characters decide to go off to hunt down three fox cubs cause they thought the fox cubs couldn't defend themselves, they later find the cubs but realize they can survive on their own. In the end they escape but they are punish for breaking the code.

I am reading the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding. I am on page 125, and it's a little weird so far. An abrast noun in my book might be wisdom and bravery. This is because in my book, people are stranding on an isalnd, and they need to detirmine weither its better to be brave, or be smart. The author talks abuot these two things a lot in this book, so it must be important.

I am currently reading 2 books one is a pretty little lairs series and one is a Nicholas Sparks book that I am currently in the last parts of the books of my book. Oh, The book I am reading is The Last Song. I have half read this before and I did not get into that much but now I am loving it! I feel like the themes in the book are don't take what you have for granted, because in the book she has her father die and she never really treated him right she would basically go out of her way to do everything he hates or to break his rules. I feel that another way of backing it up is that she has a boyfriend and she changes when being with him but in the end shwe realizes that she had so many things she threw away to be un noticing of her fathers gifts.

I'm reading Ninth Grade Bleeds by Heather Brewer. and so far it is a good book i think the abstract noun would be outcast, because Vlad isn't the most popular person. I would say he is probably one of the least unpopular people at his school he gets bullied but his best friend Henry is very popular. and the theme would be stay away from big scary dudes because they want to beat you up.

LRichey6 said...

JDewitt6 i read that book last year and it is a really good book you will continue to enjoy it throughout the whole thing.

I am currnetly reading "My Brothers Hero" by Adrian Fogelin. I am on page 89. The theme of one part of this book would have to be dishonest. The theme statment is "do not lie just to get away with something".

Jdale2 said...

I am currently reading " One True Friend". This book is written by Joyce Hansen.I am on page 100. A abstrcact noun of this book might be sad because this boy is wanting to find his brothers and sisters so badly but his adapted father will not let him send the letter to his aunt. Another abstract noun could be sneanky because Amir decides to send the letter anyways.

dgillespie5 said...

The bbok i am currently reading Under the Blood Red Sun by, Graham Salisbury. I have recently finished reading the book so am currently on no page. One abstract noun that might describe my book is bravery. In the book, the main character is faced with having to provide for his family in a time that our nation was under attack. This starts to show how truely brave he is and how manages through one of historys most devastating events.

I am currently reading Tangerine by Edward Bloor. I am now done with the book. An abstract noun for this book would be triumphing. the reason i would say triumphing is because? the main character paul over comes hios fear and finally tells about the crimes his brother has commited.

ejones6 said...

jdewitt6
Is that a good book?

pdixon6 said...

My book was Witch and Wizard the Gift I am finished with it now but one abstract noun to describe my book is courage. Through not knowing if their parents are alive or dead, to the lose of many dear friends but they still fight the "big and bad" N.O. And that takes alot of it. They must do it if they wish to get their world back to the way it was not the way it is. I enjoyed it and I am now looking for new books, suggestions?

bferguson2: I agree bravery would be a good choice

I am reading the book The Lying Game by Sara Shepard and I just finished my book this weekend. The absract noun in this book is probably bravery. It is bravery because the main character is trying to solve a muder so it takes some bravery to even get involved in muder cases. Also the main character is brave beacause people are also trying to kill her since shes trying to find out who the murderer is. Another absract noun would be mean. This is because all the girls in this book are really mean to each other like talking about each other behind their backs and not letting people join certain clubs.

jdennis5 said...

I just finished reding Spearrow Red Hawk. The author of this book is Ben Gulehsion. The theme of my book is no matter how hard your adventure is, don't be a quitter. Because in the book they always talk about not being a quitter. And when Ricky is in Mexico, he is thinking about quitting.

Jfox5 said...

I am now reading a book called Changeling by Delia Sherman. I just started the book and the book theme i would say so far is adventure. Right when the book started, the girl was tryingt to find an adventure because she thought it sounded fun according to all the books she read.

The book I just finished is called Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. The book was 629 pages long. The characters in the book learned that even if you are natural enemies, you can come together and accomplish something big. Like fire and ice coming together as a team. So, the theme is that with teamwork, you can do anything. You just have to work as a together.

lwooley5 said...

bferguson2,

I am reading the book The Girl Who Could Fly. By Victoria Forester. The Abstract noun in my book would be determination. I chose this because my charecter Piper is determined to prove that she doesn't need help with anything. Another one would be courage because it takes a lot for a eight year old girl to jump off of her house.

aneal2 said...

JDewitt6: i might have to agree The outsiders is a book filled with courage coming from everyone.

crichardson2 said...

I just currently finished the book the pretty committee strikes back by Lisi Harrison. The abstract noun I would definently use to deacribe these characters are out going because their popularity makes them the queen bees of school and they know it.

Astine2 said...

I'm currently reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. I am on page 291, and so far I think the theme of this book is 'fear.' A theme statement for my book could be 'Don't fear the unknown.'I chose this, because Piper fears what could happen to her father if she does not listen to the person telling her what to do in her dreams. She doesn't know exactly what would happen though. Leo also fears being the outcast..again, but he doesn't know how that could happen.

Astine2 said...

He gets pick on because of his skin color.

I am on page 119 of Varjak Paw, by SF Said, and the theme is a mix of skill and wisdom. Varjak is a Mesopotamian Blue cat and has been inside all his life. The only adventure he experiences is the garden, enclosed in a 9 foot wall boundary from Outside. All seems well until Gentleman accompanied by strange black cats, arrive at Varjak’s house. Now, Varjak has to learn the Way, and find a dog to defeat the mysterious men.

He reminds his past for few minutes, and he wakes up. He realized he was still alive and felt pain because of the accident, and feels really confusing.
I still don't know other theme of this book yet.

I am currently reading You Killed Wesley Payne by Sean Beaudoin. I'm on page 274 and one of the themes of this book is determination. The main character of this book, Dalton, is determined to find out who killed Wesley. In a statement, the theme would be if you are dtermined, then you get what your determineed for. The other theme of this book would be the truth. In the book the killer of Wesley Payne is someone who is totally unexpected. In a statement, the theme would be that the truth isn't always pretty.

I was reading A Time To Kill, by John Grisham. I finished it about a week ago, it was a great book. In the book Carl lee Hailey tires to get revenge on Billy Ray Cobb. He raped his daughter. So i guess that you could say that a theme statement of the book could be, 'revenge is key to happiness'. After he kills him he then gets a death sentence. so he probably learned that he should not of handled that, the way he did.

Anonymous said...

I have currently finished reading Top 8 by Katie Finn. An abstract noun that would describe this book is Mystery because in the book Madison comes back from vacation and finds out that someone has hacked her and tries to find out who. Another abstract noun is drama because the person who hacked her caused her boyfriend to break up with her, and spread mean rumurs about all her friends. The theme statement would be know who your true friends are. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more books by this author.

I just finished the book Taken. It was written by Edward Bloor. An abstract noun in my book is courage. For example while she is being held captive in an ambulance, she has to have courage so that she will stay physically and mentally safe.

I am currently reading the book, Four things my Geeky-Jock-Of-A-Best-Friend Must do in Europe. This book is by Jane Harrington and I am on page 110. This book is alot better than I thoght it would be.An abstract noun in my book would be bravery, friendship, and hope. I believe that it's bravery because her best friend makes her promise to do four bizarre things in Europe and she follows through with that. For example she doesn't feel comfortable talking to guys and her friend made her promise she would talk to a hot europrean guy and ask him out. I think friendship would be a good abstact noun because she writes to her friend everyday about anything and everything. The last abstract noun would be hope because even though the girl can't know for sure her best friend is following her promise, she has to believe she is.

Astephens5 said...

Katniss, the main character, along with all other residents of district 12, are scared of being called for the hunger games, a fight to the death on live TV. When her sister is called to participate, Katniss shows love and courage by taking her place in the games, even though she is scared.

I am have just finished reading the book Holes, by Louis Sachar. The theme of this book would probably be watch yourself. Also watch your surrounding for any falling shoes. My character probably learned a lot about this book. Basically all that he learned though was about camp green lake and his no good rotten pig stealing grandfather.

@Lbagley6 Why di you make your response have so many letters.

I am currently reading Warriors:Bluestars Prophecy by Erin Hunter. I am on page 431. I think the theme is: When all seems lost, there us always hope. Im serious. A character dies in the book and the main character feels melancholy. The main character doesnt have hope. Her mentor has hope for her. After a cat close to her dies, they have a talk. It revives the main character and she acts like her old self.

I finished summer ball by Mike Lupica. One abstract noun to describe my book is determined.I chose this because Danny always pushes through and never gives up. Another one is courage. This is true because Danny is never afraid to go against all the biggest kids even though he's the smallest.

I'm currently reading Schooled, by Gordon Korman. the page number i'm on is 100. This book probably has several themes, One is "Be true to yourself". Cap is totally harrassed because of his background; he has no idea about the social life in middle school, because he was home schooled by his hippie grandmother, Rain. He continued to wear tye-dye, do tai-chi,practice non-violence, and just be himself. Eventually, all the other kids started respecting him.

I am reading the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling and I am on page 243. One theme in my book so far would be foreboding. This is because Harry's scar has hurt (that only hurts when Voldemort is near) and in his dream a girl named Bertha Jorkins has been killed by Voldemort. Harry has heard her name many times from people who are in the ministry talking about her being missing. Harry can't remember hearing her name in the dream, but I believe that if it keeps popping up, that he'll find it familiar soon.

I really want to read that book, I've read the rest of Rick Riordan's books, including his book in the 39 Clues series. He is a really great author, I hope you enjoy the book.

I am reading The Graveyard Book. The auther is Neal Gaiman. A word you could use to describe the main charictor is curious, because he has a need to find out a lot about the outside world out of the graveyard.
