Blog #3 Due: 9/19/11

This week I want to know about the main character in your book. What is he or she like? Describe his/her personality. Are they stubborn, snobby, compassionate, positive, etc.

Make sure to give me an example from the book to support your description. Don't forget to include the title of the book, author, and what page you are currently on. Make sure your post is at least 5 sentences. Remember to also respond to 2 other classmates!

I'm currently reading The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks, I'm currently on page 50 or so. The main character of my book is Veronica, Ronnie for short. She is a 17 year old girl going to visit her fad for the summer. She is very sassy and quick witted, so far she seems unhappy and kind of dark. She feels like her dad just now wants to be a part of her life because she is getting older, and she seems mad she has to spend her summer with him.

I am currently on page 277 in The Calder Game, by Blue Balliett. Calder Pillay, 12 years old, is one of the main characters and has a bad habit of playing with his 'pentominoes'. (These are like dominoes, but are in the shape of the alphabet. For Example, he normally plays with the yellow 'W' shaped pentomino when he is nervous or excited.) He is a positive person with an imaginative mind. He is very curious when it comes to new things, and everything is new in England. When he disappears, his friends think: "He's probably on an investigation that's important, and just doesn't realize all of the adults are worried."

pdixon6;
I love the Harry Potter series. I could read them over and over and never get bored. I've read all of them about 5 times or more, and it takes a while to get through them. Good luck with finishing them before Christmas!

He is trying to spread the word about the ship that his dad sank, that it was dumping sewage into the ocean from the keys. He has a younger sister named Abbey who's age so far is unknown.

I am currently on page 240 in the book: The Sorta Sisters, by Adrian Fogelin. I actually have two main characters: Anna and Mica. Anna lives in Tallahassee, while Mica lives all the way down south, in the Keys. Although they’ve never seen each other, they are the best of friends. But sometimes, life is hard at the other end. Mica finally goes back to public school, and meets a new friend, Colleen. But most days, she spends so much time with Colleen and her family that she forgets about her own family and Anna!! In fact her Aunt Emma quoted, “She’s not even sure that Mica deserves a friend like Anna, not the way she’s been acting lately.” So from that information, I kind of find Mica very selfish, and sort of stubborn. But Anna is confident and sometimes self-critical. Sometimes she writes about Miss J, her foster mom, and is always battling herself whether to erase it because she doesn’t want Miss J to find her selfish. And Miss J called Anna a born optimist, so that means Anna’s pretty confident in her work, and really smart.

The book that I am currently reading is Heaven Is For Real by Todd Burpo. I am currently on page #118. The main character in my book is Colton Burpo. He is a little kid who had some major surgery done and had died and gone to heaven for a couple of minutes. He is a sweet little boy who is always happy and is never complaining. He always relates to God when he is giving advice or telling people they should do this or do that. He doesn't ever complain about anything ever since he went to heaven and is always positive to anything bad that is going on.

First of all my book is schooled by Gordon Korman, and I am on page 46. The main character in my book is really nerdy and geeky, and he is Capricorn Anderson. He likes star treck, star wars, and basically everything else nerdy that you can think of. Cap, for short is a lonely and sad boy and he doesn’t have that many friends. Also even though every body at his school treats him bad, he still is nice to them.

@Mmcclendon5 I’ve seen my classmates do I project on that book and I thought it was really good.

@Imartinez5 My sister is reading that book, right now and she never stops talking about how good the book is. So I am just saying that I think it’s a pretty good book.

The book I'm reading now is called Firestar's Quest, by Erin Hunter. The main character in this book is named Firestar (quite obvious by the name), and he is heroic, and rather brave. He is a natural born leader and fixes his mistakes easily. Even though he's rather over-dramatic in some views, he's generally calm and collected, serious-natured, and willing to help at any call.

The author of the book is Erin Hunter, and I am currently on page 76.

I'm currently reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, I am currently finished with the book and working on my mini project. The two main charaters in this book are Bryce and Julianna. Julianna is smart, shy, and the kind of person who stands up for what she believes in. For example when this sycamore tree was going to be cut down, she stayed up in that tree and wouldn't get down because she loved it and didn't want anything bad to happen to it. The second character is Bryce, who is friendly, outgoing, witty, and gulliable. For example somone told Bryce that Julianna's eggs(the one's her chicken laid) had salmonella and he didn't eat them even after the rest of his family did and nothing happened to them.

The book i'm reading is Twilight by Stephenie meyer. the first main character and my personal favorite is Edward Cullen. Edward is a vampire but that's not so bad until he meets his true love ,Isabella Swan, who also happens to be a human that smells better to him than to any other vampire. in the inside edward is battling with himself because what he wants and what bella needs are two very different things. On the other hand on the outside he's trying to be normal for Bella but he's also cryptic and full of himself

I am reading the book Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella and am currently on page 175. The main character is Rebecca Bloomwood who most definantly has many character traits. She has an big imagination and in a way has the mind of a kid. For example on page 167, Becky's freind Suze made pictures and the book quotes, "We map out Suze's career as a high-flying buisness woman...decide if she should wear Prada or Chanel when she goes to meet the queen." Becky is also a shopaholic (hence the title), shes extremely bubbly, and in a way a bit of an airhead.

I am reading Babe in Boyland by Jody Gehrman. I am on page 169.The man character is Natalie; she is a writer for her school newspaper. She’s kind of optimistic, and acts innocent. For example in the book on page 18, her two friends, Darcy and Chloe, are at Darcy’s and they are talking about Darcy’s boyfriend, “Don’t be so harsh” I say to Chloe, wrapping my arm around Darcy’s shoulder protectively. Chloe crosses her arms and says to me, “Go on…” “What?” “Isn’t this where you weave elaborate excuses for him?” Chloe imitates my voice. “He’s afraid of the passion he feels for you, Darcy! He can only love you openly when he’s stoned because that’s the only time he can deal with your bewitching power over him, blah blah blah.”

The book I’m reading is the woods Harlan Coben and I’m on page 382. The main character is Paul Copeland he is probably strong minded about his work because he is the county prosecutor. So he is positive sensitive and a little shy he can’t open up to many people because of things that happened in his past. One reason I would say this is because he said “I see my father with that shovel tears streaming down his face I have never seen my father cry before not even when his own father died. Not even when he heard about my sister, Camille. But he was crying now. ” That’s why I think he is sensitive, shy, and positive.

"I trucked up the hill, and as I got closer and saw what the men were holding, I figured out in a hurry what was making Juli refuse to come out of the tree. Chain saws. Don't get me wrong here, okay? The tree was an ugly mutant tangle of gnarly branches..."

I'm reading the 9th book in the Pretty Little Liars series, and as some of us girls who watch the TV show based on the books, know that there's not 1 main character; there's 4. We'll start with Spencer! Spencer's a very classy and I wouldn't use snobby, but she's the preppy girl out of the group. She's very into school. She's accepted into Princeton in the book! Next is Emily; Emily is very laid back and calm, but she's an excellent swimmer. Tons of scouts from colleges go and watch her in the book. She's the quieter one in the book, but she's really sweet and was the one that loved Ali the most. Now we move onto Aria! Aria is the very unique one in the group. She's outspoken, but also laid back at the same time. She also is always somehow in a relationship with a boy. Last but not least is Hanna. Hanna is the stylish, popular one of the group. She's a beauty and all the boys at Rosewood Day drool over her. She hates her new "family" and is dating Aria's brother, Mike.

Ella , Sammy's older sister and Fin's younger sister is most of the times sad and depressed or afraid. She is captive in a cve at the momment. I'm reading Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper. The main character is Andrew "Andy" Jackson and throughout the entire book he is very depressed and doesn't understand why he survived the car crash but his friend didn't. He started failing classes and kept thinking about death and his friend Rob. For example, he and his girlfriend were walking over a bridge and he stopped, went to the edge, and thought about jumping off. But luckily Keisha, his girlfriend was their to stop him from continuing. However, when he broke up with his girlfriend he thought he didn't have anything else to live for so he killed himself. His best friends were surprised because he seemed okay at school but they all know that he was having trouble coping with his friends death. I just finished the book the other day it was so good!

The book I am currently reading is Smiles to Go by Jerry Spinelli. It's a good book so far and I can't put it down. The main character is a really nice person and is a science geek. He knows a lot about science because when he was little he hung out with a science geek named Jim. Jim loved to tell him all about what he was doing and creating. The main character can get inmpatient though, like the time his friend BT was late for a monoply match; "Pizza's getting cold," I said. "Let's just start. Teach BT a lesson for once" (pg.15) I think it's entertaining and fun and I reccomend it to everybody.

My book is called The Pledge. By Chandra Spearks Taylor. The main character is the girl named Courtland. She is a self respected girl, she is confused in relationships, and sometimes sassy. Like when her mom told her it was best tat she didn't date until she was old enough she yelled at her mom and told her she was old enough to make her own decisions.

aneal2 said...

Kflanagan:The book your reading seems very intresting. I think I might read it next time.

the book I'm reading is Red Kayak by Patrica Cummings. The main character Brady is very heroic. An example of his heroics is when he tries to rescue a small boy from a 40 degrees white-rapids river.I'm currently on page 73. This book is very captivating.

The main character i think is warm hearted and enjoys adventurous. In the book I’m reading Jason (the main character) is taking a trail called the Chillkoot. Many people are struggling to make it through the trail to Alaska. Along the way many people animals are collapsing due to the heavy weight and lack of energy over the long pass. Jason has seen so many people killing their animals, he sees another man killing his dogs. He stops the man and saves the dog that why I think he’s warm hearted. The book I am readin is Runaway by Wendelin Van Draanen.I'm on page 160. The main charactor on my book is Holly. She is 12years old and she runs away from her new foster parents. She actually gets away-and what feels like an escape at first soon becomes a daily struggle for survivle. She likes writing and reading. When she write something, she talks about stuff that she would never normally talk about.
Actually she is homeless girl, but she always believe she is a sea gypsy.Because she wanted to go to sea and she thought homeless doesn't belongs to her.
I hope to read more of Wendelin Van Draanen.

I am currently reading Schooled, by Gordan Korman. The main character in my book is a boy named Capricorn Anderson. He grew up on a farm called Garland that is completely isolated from modern society. People think he is strange, because he looks and acts like a 1960s hippie. He is a very earth friendly person, who does not believe in fighting or war. He is very nice to everyone he meets and it’s very hard to make him mad. His hair stretches all the way down to his hips, and all of his clothes are homemade which include tie die shirts, jeans, and thatch shoes. Every morning he practices Tia Chi at his school. I am currently on page 118.

The book I'm reading is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling and I'm also on page 192. The main character is Harry Potter and I would have to say his personality is brave. The reason I say that he is brave is because he is supposidly being searched for by the prisoner of Azkaban, a wizard prison that is supposed to be impossible to escape from. The prisoner searching for him is named Serius Black and is said to have killed numerous people with just one curse, and Harry isn't too frightened, like I would be.

bbedell6 said...

kflanagen6, I started to read that book last summer but in the very beginning it seemed really uninteresting and I put it down. But, your description makes it sound mysterious. Is it a good book so far?

bbedell6 said...

pdixon6, That's a lot of pages to read before Christmas! I'm on the third Harry Potter and they get bigger and bigger after the first and second. But, the movies and the books are pretty similiar. The main parts in the books are in the movies, just not as much details are in the movies.

The book I have finished reading is called Warriors: The Power of Three: Long Shadows by Erin Hunter. Now, my book does not have one main character. It has three!
The first cat is Jaypaw (Now called Jayfeather due to earning his medicine cat name), he is stubborn, blind, sensitive, and quick to make a witty/rude remark. I have noticed that he has matured A LOT! He was so sensitive about his blindness that he wished he were never born. Now he’s "meh" about his blindness. A great example of his personality is when Brambleclaw (the Thunderclan deputy) asks him if he or Leafpool (the medicine cat) if they saw anything while walking back to Thunderclan camp. He retorts with “I didn’t see anything”. He can also walk into other cats dreams and has a spectacular memory for herbs. Jaypaw is part of a prophecy.
The second main character is Lionblaze: I am not sure too sure about his personality. He has fallen in love with a cat (later rejected her) and broke the warrior code. Lionblaze cannot be wounded in battle. He is part of a prophecy. I cannot come up with an example of this because his personality is not as developed as the others.
Hollyleaf is the third main character: She is a very loyal cat! She cannot even imagine breaking the warrior code herself, though she has done it. She is the politician of the three (by three I mean Jaypaw, Lionblaze and Hollyleaf). Here is a perfect example of her personality: Squirrelflight has just told them that she is not their birth mother but says that she is proud of them. Hollyleaf is in so much rage, she hisses, “Go away and leave us alone! You have no right to be proud of us, no right to feel anything towards us! You let us believe you were our mother, and you’re not!” Nobody knows what her special power is…yet.

By the way: Be careful of your grammars! I get so annoyed when people dont use correct grammar.

In my book, Peeled by Joan Bauer. I'm currently on page 42, and the main character of my book is Hildy Biddle. Hildy is a reporter for her school, and is most definately a nosy persistand type of person. She lives in a very small town with her family, and manages a farm with them as well. Hildy is always trying to get the inside dirt on things so she can write a good paper, though sometimes she has trouble because people don't always take high school reporters seriously. Something that shows that she is persistant and nosy is a part on page 14 where it says, ""Hi Sherrif." "What are you doing here, Hildy?" Not everyone is glad to see you when you're a reporter. "I'm doing a covering this for The Core.""

I am currently reading Halo:The Flood, by William C. Dietz. My main character is Master Cheif Petty officer, John-117. He is the main character of the Halo trilogy. He is the only known surviving spartan super soldier and humanities final hope in fending off against the alien horde referred by humans as the covenant. He throughout the book, he shows his legendary skill as a soldier. His personality shows as he is stuborn, brave, and resourceful throughout the story. He never looks down on a situation and excels at success in any situation. All through the book Chief is looked up to by the soldiers he leads into combat while present on the "ring world" of Halo. In the part Im on, he leads a squad of marines onto a covenant ship to rescue their captured comrads, killing almost everything on board that wasn't human.

I am reading Nothing to Fear by Jackie French Koller. It’s about an Irish immigrant boy named Daniel Garvey. Now his last name sounds a little bit weird but he has more of a mischievous personality cause no matter where he goes he always faces trouble. He can also be a little bit stubborn like how his friend Mickey asks him “Well… what do you say we take Kitty and Maggie to the movies tomorrow?” well during the conversation he says no but then realizes that he owes Mickey for saving him from the Sullivan twins. Since right now I’m on page 81 I think so far I think the book is great. He is also very trustful cause one time since he worked at the Weissman store because when his friends ask for free food he says no but is now called a “rat fink” for not giving free stuff to them.

@mmcclendon5
The book is realistic fiction not non-fiction. It could happen but it didn't say that in history a boy fell off into the wilderness by plane

I'm reading Someone Like you by Sarah Desssen. a realistic fiction novel. The main character is Halley, a 16-year-old in high school. Before high school, Halley was very family oriented, but now she's more of the party type. She's more into boys now because of her bestfriend who moved there named Scarlett. Halley is more quiet and shy than Scarlett who is the outspoken of the 2. Halley has long blonde hair and a deep tan. She is very secretive about what goes on her life to everyone except Scarlett. Right now, on about page 167, Halley's mom is becoming very uptight because Halley used to tell her everything. but now she doesn't really include her mom in her life. Halley has a new boyfriend named Macon who she's trying to be someone she's not for.
