Make up Blog

This is due by 3:30pm on Friday 11/21.

Answer the following question:

How did the main character change in your book? What were they like at the beginning and what were they like at the end?

In your answer you must cite evidence from the beginning of the book that shows what they were like at the beginning AND cite evidence from the end of the book that shows how they have changed.

This means you have two quotes from the novel in your answer in addition to your explanation of the change. Your response must be at least 5 sentences and you must comment on 2 classmates posts.

I am currently reading Summer of Secrets by: John Langan. In the beginning Ben was getting abused by his step dad and he was scared to tell people what happened. here is the evidence to support my claim. "I have a surprise for you, she paused to examine my face what happened to you ? that bruise looks painful. Its nothing I said almost without thinking." At the end of the book he wasn't afraid to tell anyone about his problems with his step dad, and his auntie Fay called the upper law enforcement. "you got two minutes till the police throw yo' butt in jail were you belong."

Im am currently reading hoot by Carl Hiaasen. At the beginning of the story Roy was really quiet and was a nerd "im kinda scared of him" talking about the bully. Towards the end of the story Roy stood up to the bully and broke his nose when he was trying to hurt him " i'll write him a letter saying that i'm sorry." So pretty much he's showing he's kind and that he's kinda a nerd.

I'm currently done reading The Rivalry by John Feinstein. The main character in my book Stevie Thomas, didn't really change much but if I had to say something it would be about how in the beginning he was a little on the shy side. In the book Agent Dowling wanted him to sit in the room with the Vice President and talk to him for about 5 minutes. Stevie looked Agent Dowling right in the face and told him "I'm sorry but I'm not your guy for that job." He somewhat changed throughout the book but not that much. Near the ending when there were two guys trying to assasinate the mayor, Stevie wanted to help so Dowling told him to help search for the two men. When Stevie found the mayor he was in a room tied up. When Stevie soon realized the two men were also in the room they told him to keep quiet. After he refused the they attempted to intimidate Stevie not knowing he was a reporter. In the book it says Stevie said to one of the men, "I'm not afraid of you. "

I just finished Taken by Edward Bloor. The main character Charity Meyers starts as a girl who's afraid to make a move. When Charity was kidnapped she spent most of the time in the beginning thinking about waiting patiently for freedom. After time of being confused and frustrated Charity begins to question her kidnappers, get more info on what's going on around her and why, eventually convincing a kidnapper to help her even if they didn't get very far. Over time Charity's attitude changed from a innocent minded confused girl to a girl that had a goal and was making her way towards it.

In the beginning of The Last Princess, Eliza was very sad about her mother’s death and she was always thinking about how her family is going to change so much without her mother. “My family had grown hollo inside, like an old tree dead at the roots but still standing. Our hearts were broken” (page 6). In the end of the book, Eliza had more courage and confidence, and she wasn’t scared of getting killed by Cornelius Hollister because she killed him first. She wasn’t going through life scared anymore. “I looked up at the sky, the rain falling in my eyes. ‘Thank you,’ I whispered to whoever was listening. We were alive” (page 290).

At the beginning of the book , Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Michaelsen my main character Cole Mathews was a "violent juvenile offender" stated on page 4. Throughout the book he learned his ways on a diserted island. "I'm not ever going to hurt you " said Cole on page 236. Cole at the beginning of the book pounded Peter Driscoll's skull in the concrete now he won't hurt a fly. Cole has finally learned his ways

He himself didn't really change. But his happiness changed throughout the book. At the beginning he wasn't that happy and his living conditions weren't good either. But at the end he was happier and he was living in a better place. For his birthday all he got was a working permit from his uncle, and Ty is only twelve. Also, he's not allowed to use the bathroom inside, so he has to use a Porta zpotti in the back. On page 13 it says, "Instead of climbing the stack of cinder blocks that served as the front step, Ty skirted around the house and down a small dirt trail that disappeared into the pines. He needed to use the bathroom, and Ty wasn't allowed to use the one in the house. Forty feet inside the tree line, the path ended at a bright blue Porta Potti. But at the end he moves with his brother who REALLY loves and cares about Ty. His house has a home theater and a backyard big enough to play an actual football game. On page 139 it says," 'It's only eighty-two hundred feet' Linda said to Thane. 'At two-seven it's the best bargain in northern New Jersey. The owner's wife missed her family and they moved back to Brazil.' " So that shows that Thane's house was way better than their Uncle's trailer.

The book i read was The Apothecary by Maile Meloy. The main character in the book, Janie, begins very naive and unsure about a new life in England. The very idea of leaving America seems to really startle her, As she states on page 9 "I didn't want to move to London. I liked my friends, and I liked my school" She slowly overcomes this discomfort with the help of her friend Ben. As the plot progresses she begins to accept her new life and becomes very at home away from home.

I was currently reading the book Skinny by Donna Cooner. At the beginning of the book the main character, ever, is very uncomfortable about her weight and is very insecure about her weight. A quote that shows this is when she states on page 4," I cant escape me. Trapped in layers of blubber and excess everything. It all feels tight... stretched... uncomfortable." Towards the end of the book Ever is more confident about herself and her weight from the bypass surgery she gets. A statement that shows she is more confident is," surgery changed my stomach. losing weight changed my stomach.'

I was reading the book Flipped by Wedalinn Van Draanen. In the beginning of the book the two main characters were not good friends. "why does she keep following me around" is what one character continued to think. At the end of the book the two become closer and share an honest relationship.

I have read FableHaven by Brandon Mull and I am finished with the book. Kendra, one of the two main characters in my book has changed through out the book. At the beginning of the book, she is a goody goody who follows all of the rules, and doesn't want to do any thing to get in trouble. The evidence from the text is on page 27. "But Grandpa Sorenson doesn't want us in the woods." She goes from goody goody to a person who takes risks. This is shown by her finding out about the refuge FableHaven for mystical creatures, just knowing about it and helping car take it is dangerous. The evidence from the text is on page 75. "FableHaven would be too much to swallow for most people."

In my book Percy Jackson and the lightning thief by Rick Riordan it's kinda obvious that the main character is Percy Jackson. At the beginning of the book he seems like a really bad kid. I know that from when it says "I've been kicked out of so many schools that I don't remember the first"(pg.16). But as the book progresses he changes, he starts to turn into a well-mannered kid with a lot of responsibility in his hands. I know he was a good, well- mannered kid when he saves the world and "returns [Zeus's] lightning bolt" (pg.189).

In my book Picture the Dead by Adele Griffin and Lisa Brown my main character, Jennie, didn't really change throughout the story. But what did happen was her thoughts and perspective of her fiancé brother ,Quinn, did. At first she believed Quinn was suffering also from the loss of his brother when he returned from the war "It takes all my resilience to walk across the room and slip my hand into Quinn's. He is suffering, too, after all." On page 15. She then realizes he's just as cold-hearted, stuck up and rude as he was before when they were younger "Quinn ignores her, an old and useful habit," on page 2, "As we got older, we avoided our cousin rather than shrivel under his scorn." On page 13, "You killed him, my nightmares, the strangling-- Will had been warning me. It is all so stunningly, horrifically clear. I step back. You killed you're own brother." On page 263. Those examples shows how her perspective changed on Quinn throughout the story.
