Blog #10 Due: Monday 11/10/14

We just learned about abstract nouns and how they help you determine the theme of a text.
For this week's blog entry, tell us one of the themes of your independent reading book.
If you need help, look at your theme notes in your binder. You can also ask yourself "What did I(or the character) learn?"
Do not forget to comment on 2 classmates posts. Make sure to include the title of your book, the author, and what page you are currently on. Your response should be at least 5 sentences.

I am currently reading The Last apprentice Revenge of the witch and I am on pg. 100.
The theme of my book is Never judge a book by its cover. This is the theme because after reading almost halfway through the book, the book is actually really good. And that says something because I don't like reading.

The book I am currently reading is called Hideout, by Gordon Korman, and I am on page 211. I think one theme of my book is trust. I think this because Griffin, and mostly Savanna have to trust their friends to take care of Luthor. Griffin also has to trust that everyone will follow the plan. I think teamwork is another good theme for Hideout because Griffin, Savanna, Ben, Pitch, Logan, and Melissa have to work together, from different summer camps, to hide Luthor from Swindle.

the book i am currently engaged in reading is The Alienist by Caleb Carr. The overall theme of the book is that people years ago are not too different than people today, and that violent actions will always continue from generation to another. this is shown by demonstrating the violent crimes committed by the books antagonist, and by the protagonists responses to them.

I'm reading "wereworld storm of sharks" by Curtis Jobling. The theme of my book is to never ever give up no matter how hard it gets. Drew Ferran must over come Lucas who currently is on the throne as a tyrant. Drew must wage war with Bast the home country of Lucas. Drew is missing a hand and now his sight yet he is not giving up on his country or the war. His army numbers few yet he still seeks allies to help overcome Lucas.

I’m currently reading Half a Chance by Cynthia Lord and am on page 21. I think the theme of my book is change is a good thing. I think that is the theme because the girl Lucy in my book just moved to a new state and her parents are telling her everything will end up fine. Lucy meets a new friend and an enemy on her first day in her new neighborhood. The theme was pretty easy to find because in the story it said how Lucy was nervous.

I am reading the book Maze Runner by James Dashner and I'm on page 167. I think one of the themes of this book is that never give up on something just because it seems impossible or too hard. Thomas and a bunch of other teens are trapped in the middle of the maze, and most of them believe that it is impossible to escape. Thomas doesn't give up and he tries to find a way out of the maze. It seems impossible because the maze is huge and there are dangerous creatures in the maze at night, but Thomas faces this problem head on and goes into the maze. So no matter how hard something seems, never give up because you can do the impossible. Thomas found a way out of the maze because he didn't give up. The theme is never give up on something because it's too hard because anything is possible.

I am readong Hide and Seek by Katy Grant and i am on page 75. The theme of my book is "its always best to follow your instincts". The main character, Chase, he' always ditermined and follows his instinct to do the right things. I used determination to help me answer my blog. I have learned that the first sign is to always follow your instincts.

I'm currently reading the Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare, the genre is mystery, and I'm on page 488. The theme of the book is don't be greedy. It is greed since the mystery genre is that three main characters (Will, Jem, and Tessa) face a couple of people who's lives were torn by gambling and greed. Greed because the gamblers wanted to get money but only lost money. Once they lost so much money they followed the main antagonists who's name is the Magister(french for master) promises to clear their debt as long as those people swear allegiance to him. greed tears people apart from wanting everything to losing everything the gamblers or opponents had. Also the majority of the opponents are just people in debt. To known the minor yet powerful and personal army the magister controls just read the book or summary.

emasio6: Nice theme.

I am reading The last Apprentice Curse of the bane by Joseph Delaney and I just finished the book. I think If I had to pick a theme of this book it would be to be brave. The reason for this is because no matter what enemy Thomas faces, he comes out victorious. At the end of the book he has to defeat the bane, so they go to the ghost of Naze to find out how and he tells him he has to stab the bane in the heart. So when his master, the spook, tries to, he fails and gets knocked out. But then Thomas, the apprentice comes and stabs him and almost dies. But against all odds he comes back, and the bane was defeated because he was brave.

@amountain4 Great blog1

I am currently reading "Game Changers" by Mike Lupica, and I am on page 21. The theme of the book is to have trust in your friends. In the book Ben didn't believe that his teammates had the skill to beat the team in their first game, but in the second game he had confidence that they would win, and he did. Because he had the trust in his teammates, he won the second game.

@fbougher that's a good theme..

@rcortes5 I've heard of that book before!

I am currently reading Fire from the rock, by Sharon M. Draper, and I am on page 117. The theme of my book is a lot of things but mainly Racism. In fire from the rock there is a lot of Racism going on. They have a all white school and all black school. The all white school is called Central High, where they are interrogating the school. So the theme is mainly race.

I am finished reading my book which was Prisoner B-3087 and the last page was 256. I believe the theme is survival because that’s all the main character wants to do. He is in a concentration camp during the holocaust so surviving at all cost is the way to live. He also keeps repeating it throughout so that’s a dead giveaway. That’s way I think survival is the theme of my story

The book i am reading right now is 'The Paladin Prophecy' by Mark Frost. I am on page 354. I think the theme of my book is to live by the rules. In this book the main character 'Will West' has rules for EVERYTHING. He is strictly against disobeying them. He literally takes these rules to the fullest because his dad made them for the family to follow, and he does not want to make his dad disappointed

I am reading “code name verity” by Elisabeth Wein. I’m currently on page 73. The theme of my book so far is “true friends never go”. Verity left her best friend named Maddie and is now regretting it because Maddie is in danger, verity is currently stuck in enemy territory all because she won’t tell them a big secret that could either destroy her home or save herself (she is a spy). She only has a limited time to tell and if she doesn’t, she and Maddie will end up with a bad faith…

I'm reading Murdered, my Sweet by Joan Lowery Nixon on page 121. The theme to me would be "Don't get confused between fiction and reality." I say this because Jenny's mom, who's a book writer is acting like a detective from one of her books for a real life murder case. She keeps thinking that she's actually in it and ends up making Jenny do most of the work.

emasio6 I might look into that book, it looks good.

I am reading The clue of the broken locket,by: Carolyn Keene.
the theme of this story is
trying to say don't take something that is not yours, focus on your business. Nancy is trying to solve a mystery but she can't because
the neighbor doesn't let her
because she is trying to find an iron bird in his house.
So all this
mysterious things happening around her she doesn't like it.

I am currently reading "Shadow of the Hegemon" by Orson Scot Card and i am on page 270. the theme of my book is trust your friends and don't worry because in a fight Bean kept looking back even though Ender was there. Bean worried too much about getting attacked from the behind than actually doing what he was suppose to do and look forward. Fights like this happened throughout the book and it hasn't happened yet but I think they might die because of it. bean also ends up going to help Ender's brother take over the earth by manipulating politics and kind of leaves Ender for Peter. With the help and trust of Bean he will eventually rule the world.

I am currently reading Flipped by Wendalin Van Draanen, and I am currently on page 179. I think one of the themes in my book is friendship. Friendship means a lot to the characters in my book. Some of the friendship is the annoying get away from me kind,but they know they couldn't live without the annoying person. There is also the best friend relationships that nothing could break them apart. So no matter where you are in the story there is some type of trust and friendship going on.

I am currently reading “Fake Me a Match” by Lauren Barnholdt and I am on page 214. I think the theme of my book is to be honest and do not lie to yourself, because the main character Avery fakes a match for the matchmaking project. She thought she should match people however she wanted to because her friends would be mad if she didn’t do it. She went into the computer lab and faked matches. However, few weeks later, she got caught by a teacher and she had to call her parents. She was in a big trouble. In addition, other friends and people were also upset because she lied to them. It wasn’t hard to find the theme because it literally explained what happened, what Avery did wrong, and how Avery felt at that situation.

I am currently reading Houdini by Clinton Cox, and I am on page 75. The theme of my book is magic is knowledge. The reason I believe that this is the theme is because Houdini made all of his money because his "magic" were just studying a his handcuffs and learn exactly how to break out. Knowledge is power is another way to state the theme because he was making so much money and could by anything he wanted by performing a couple of times. The theme of Houdini is magic is knowledge.

I am reading “Book of the dead the mummy” by Larry Mike Garmon and I am on page 84. I believe the theme for this book is never judge something before you get to know its purpose. In the book the main characters are trying to defeat the mummy because they think he’s a monster. The mummy however, is trying to find his long last love and will stop at nothing to find it. So never judge something or someone before you get to know it.

I am currently reading The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint. I am on page 177. The theme of my book is that friends will always be there for you. For example, when Imogene was having nightmares about her old imaginary friend, Pelly, and the fairies, her friend, Maxine stays the night and supports her.

zlwhite2 said...

@Avillanueva5: You need to capitalize the title of your book.

For example , Margo she sacrificed herself so that Wisty lives she died in her place so that Wisty won't be hunted any more. When he finally does this, he becomes extremely famous, but a lot of people also wanted to kill him. People are constantly threatening him and going after his friends and family. They also thought they could trust Ali but the secrets that they only told Ali had been leaked. Thats why I think the theme is be careful with who you trust.

I am currently finished with Cinder by Marissa Meyer. The theme of my book is ones looks hides’ secrets. I chose this theme because the main character is a cyborg but she doesn’t look like one. So no won besides her stepmother, stepsisters, and their android Iko knows so she technically a secret cyborg. No one else knows about her mechanical parts.

The book i read was I,Emma Freke by Elizabeth Atkinson and I'm finish with it.The theme of my book is finding where you fit in. I believe this the theme because Emma stands at 6ft tall at only 12,and has a weird last name that she wonders about. I also believe this because she only has one friend who is two years younger than her.Emma also attends a family reunion and meets family who she acts like.

The book I was reading was P.S. I Hate You by Mia Mike, and I completed the book. The theme of the book is love can overcome. The main character, Harry and Blue, thought they hated each other. They thought this for years, but the truth was they loved each other. Once they both realized that they still eent through some ups and downs but in the end they end up together. And love each other unconditionally.

@ddavis5 great job!!

@skkeys nice!!!

I am on page #35 in “The Enemy” by Charlie Higson, I have just started reading it. I believe that one of the main themes in the book, “The Enemy” is to never pretend that you don’t need help. Though the theme may change once I get farther in the book, but from what I have read so far I believe it is what I put above. The reason I think its theme is this is because of how all the children are working together to survive the disease that killed almost all the grown-ups and those who survived were turned into zombies. I also believe that the theme might also be to never give up or put blame onto one person, because the Waitrose kids(all the kids who had found shelter in the Waitrose supermarket) had recently lost one p the little children because a grown-up had nabbed the poor boy and Maxie thought it was all her fault and that Arran would yell at her but Arran’s little scavenger group hadn’t done so well either and they almost gave up, but they didn’t give up.

@yyoon3 - I love that book so so much

@snturner3 - good blog!

I am currently reading Smiles to Go by Jerry Spinelli and I'm on page 113. I think the theme of my book is friendship. I think it's friendship because the whole book bases off of the strong friendship between 3 middle school students. Throughout the book I am learning more about them and their friendship grows more and more in every page.

the book that i am currently reading is called Milkweed by Jerri Spinelli, and i am on page 59. The theme of my book is to never put yourself in a position where it could cost you your life. The reason i think that this is the heme is because in this story the boy is putting himself in all of these problems and it is starting to get very dangerous and sketchy. This boy is going through a lot and he is risking his life for it all. I'm not quite done with the book so I'm sure the theme will be mrs than just that.

I am currently reading "A Tale Dark & Grimm" by Adam Gidwitz I am on page 84. I believe the theme of the book so far is that you can never trust someone or in other word you never really know someone.. I believe this is the theme because in the book my characters are constantly moving around and changing their perspective on others because they don't feel like they really know the other characters. The parents of my two main characters tried to kill them at a young age so the children have "trust issues" in the book. The children soon realize that you never really know someone even if you have known them since your first breath because they might trade you in a second for their own life.
@amountain4 sounds great!

I am reading “Theodore Boone: the accused” by John Grisham, and I am on page 69. One of the themes of this book is that things aren’t always what they seem. Theodore learned that he had to be very careful or he could get in trouble for things he didn’t do. He has been getting harassed for a while and he doesn’t know that someone wants to pin a crime he didn’t commit onto him so that he can take the fall.

I am reading FableHaven by Brandon Mull and I am on page 15. One of the themes of my book is never judge a book by its cover. This is because it represents a real life situation turned into a magical discovery. When 2 kids visit their grandparents for a week due to their other grandparents dying, they think everything is ordinary. Then, they discover a hidden refuge where mythical creatures have been gathering for centuries to prevent their extinction.
@emasio6 Good job

I am reading "The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer" by Michelle Hodkin and I am on page 134. Since I have not yet finished my book I don't know for sure what my theme is. I think my theme will be choose your friends wisely. I think this because Mara's friends convince her to go to an abandon asylum in the middle of the night. When they get there the building collapses and all her friends die and she is left in the hospital. Her friends got her in to bad situation and led her in to a lot of trouble.

The title of the book that I'm reading is Drama High: Holidaze. The author is L. Divine, and I'm on page 185. One of the themes in my story is Jayd tries to find out why everyone wants drama with her. The theme is basically how to survive in high school and keep your cool. Jayd learned that drama can not be stopped and she just has to leave it alone and laugh at it.

When she had enough trust she let him her brother got kidnapped. Now she spending the rest of the boy looking for her brother.

I am currently reading Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Richard Jacobson. I am on page 85. There are many themes in this book. I think that the main theme is to never give up. This is my opinion because the book is about a young boy who has to look for his mother. This boy never gives up ha has been searching for her for at least 2 or 3 days.
dwhite3 Great job!!!!

i am currently reading skinny by Donna Cooner. The theme of this book is not to judge somebody by their looks. Because, since the main charcheter is getting judged by how she look in terms of her weight people ignore her. Epically the one guy that she likes.if they didnt judge her then it would be normal.

I am reading Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood by Oliver Bowden. I am on page 20. The theme is "You can lose the battle but win the war." I got this from Ezio sparring a Templars' life but latter on kills him. This shows that he lost the battle but latter on won the war.
