Blog #1 Due: Monday 1/30/12

It is the beginning of a the new semester and new Blog numbers. This is also your chance for a clean slate and to be successful in Reading Class.

Think about the last book you read. Looking back can you think of any examples of Foreshadowing that occurred? If you need help with what foreshadowing is look back in your notebook. Give a detailed example and include your books title, author, and if you would recommend your classmates to read the book.  Make sure your response is at least 5 sentences and that you comment on 2 other posts.

The last book I read was The City OF Ember. By Jeanne DuPrau. Yes I would recommend this book I would also recommend the movie. Looking back I actually can not find forms of any foreshadowing as I'm looking back.

I am reading Harry Potter and the prizoner of Azkaban, by J.K. Rowling. I am on page 250 at the moment. Sirius Black has escaped from the wizrd prison known as Azkaban. Everyone, including the mininster of magic thinks that he is after Harry Potter. Dementors have been placed at the entrances of Hogwarts for the student's protection. Harry wants to learn how to defend himself so he asks Professor Lupin to teach him. During their lesson Harry asks about Black and Lupin goes stiff, as if he knows him.Later on Lupin is to be found helping Sirius into the castle. I would recommend this book it is very entertaining.

The last book I read was Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. My book is about Juli and Bryce. The first time she saw him, she flipped. Ever since then, she's been crazy for him. But eighth grade is starting and everything is not how it used to be.. Juli sees a whole other side of Bryce and Bryce starts to realize what he's been missing out on for the past six years.
An example of foreshadowing in my book would be when Bryce first moves across the street from Juli, Juli grabs his hand and they both blush and run away. That's foreshadowing what will happen later on in the book between Juli and Bryce, but you'll have to read the book to find out! I reccomend this book to anyone, especially those in eighth grade who have a crush ;)

i read Marry Poppins by P.L. Travers. One form of forshadowing is when Marry points out when the wind starts to change. When she blew in on the East wind, she told the children she would leave when the winds change. A few pages before the end,she says the winds are starting to change, indicating that she will leave soon.

The last book I read was A Boy At War by Harry Mazer. One example of foreshdpwing is that the main chracter Adam says the date and that his dad is stationed at pearl harbor where the japanese attacked the americans. It also says that adam is at pearl harbor and he his dad is stationed on the arizona which sinks when they attack.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books aboout the history of wars and people who like a little action.

the last book I read was The Goddess Test by Aimeee Carter. There were a few forshadowing points such as when the girl, Molly, invited Ava to the party and Ava had a ba didea in the pit of her stomach. there was also the part in the book where she found out Henry was not exactly who he said he was. I would reccomend this book to students who like fantasy, about roman gods and goddesses and alot of romance.

tfried2 said...

@hpeel - is Artemis Fowl the fantasy book about some genious kid or something? How many pages is it?

sbogue2 said...

The last book I read was The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. An example of foreshadowing would be in the beginning, his best friend Annabeth, daughter of the goddess Athena, got jealous whenever percy talked about his almost girlfriend Rachel. In the end, after the war between the Titans and the Gods was over and the Gods won, Percy and Annabeth kissed and started dating because Percy would always feel bad for Annabeth when Rachel came up. I would recommend this book and whole Percy Jackson series to everyone because they're so much fun to read and there's always action! Also, they are the funniest books I've ever read and the Gods and Goddesses seem so realistic even though it's fantasy.

crichardson2 said...

@astine2 i'm a big Harry Potter fan even though i'm team Twilight now I still go back and read his books.

sbogue2 said...

astine2, I love the Harry Potter series! The one you reading is actually my least favorite book because it was so dark and a bit sad. What's your favorite movie or book in the series?

The last book I read was Fast Life by Celeste O'Neil. An example of foreshadowing is when she got home she saw the door cracked open and knew her mom was working late. So she knw they had been robbed. When she walked in her house she saw that the couch, t.v. and everything else was gone.

The last book I read was Fire and Ice by Erin Hunter. Earlier in the story, Fireheart met his sister, Princess, who was heavily pregnant with kits. Later, Princess gave Fireheart her firstborn, his nephew, and Fireheart returned back to camp with his nephew.

Closer to the end, the dawn patrol scented more Shadowclan cats on their territory. Fireheart found some rabbit bones in some fronds where Shadowclan's scent is laid. Then Bluestar calls a patrol together to attack Shadowclan. Fireheart realized that Brokenstar and his party of rouges could attack the heart of the territory. A menacing yowl sounded from the entrance of the camp. It was Brokenstar.

@drumore2
Hahaha. You thought that the Twilight books are not good! I don't like them either. I think the point of the book is to have alot of Foreshadowing and innuendo.

smasingil said...

My book is Inheritance. The Author is Christopher Paolini. I dont think there are any foreshadowing moments. It is a fast paced book so there was no time for eragon or roran to be forshadowing. I would definatly recommend this book to the other students in the class but they would have to start at the first one.

TMartinez5 said...

@smasingil
How can a fiction book not have any foreshadowing? For your book, wont they pick up clues where you can infer the next big event in the story (or series)?

cgreek5 said...

The last book I read was Okinawa: the Last Ordeal. I would recomend that book to people who would like history. Unfortunatly that book has no foreshadowing in it but I do Know what foreshadowing means.

wlawrence6 said...

The last book i was reading was 11th grade burns by heather brewer. I would recomend other people to read it because it is a pretty good book. But one sign of foreshadowing was when the main character's old friend tries to kill him i could tell it would be uncomfortable for them at school. And it was, big time. But he does not even encounter the main character for the longest time and when he finally does he surprising doesn't harm him what so ever

wlawrence6 said...

The last book I read was Sabotaged by Margaret Peterson. Looking back, I noticed that -- as also did the characters in the book -- the name Seven started with S, as did another character in the book named Sam, so I figured those two were tied together, and as I expected, they were.

The book I am reading is The Help by Kathryn Sockett. I am currently on page 6. An example of Foreshadowing would be at the beginning of the book when Aibileen is talking about Mae Mobley being born. I knew this from the start, but this really gave you a clue that this was all in the past but also about segregation. You can tell by the dialogue at the beginning of the book. Aibileen was talking about how she thinks the mother is treating her child is wrong. Mrs. Mobley (the mom) had called Mae (the daughter) ‘it’ as if she wasn’t a human being.

Anderson. The last book I read was Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Some foreshadowing that accoured in this book was that Bella kept thinking Edward was not a human, and she later discovers that he is a vampire. I recommend this book to ANYONE, because it is a little bit of adventure, drama, romance combined in one amazing book. Read it :)

The last book i read was The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger. There wasnt alot of foreshadowing but some that occured was when Harvey was always trying to prove Origami Yoda was fake. Later it came to no shock that he made an Origami Darth Vador. You can tell that Harvey was going to try to do something to Dwight by the way he always said Yoda was fake and stupid. I recommend this book to students who are nerds and like this kind of action. It is very funny and you will like this.

The book I'm reading is The Pigman's Legacy by Paul Zindel. It's about these kids (John and Lorraine) who accidentally kill an old man, and during the course of the book, find an elderly in their Pigman's (Mr.Pignati, the guy they killed) house. Lorraine thinks that this elderly is a reincarnation of their Pigman, and that they are being given a second chance. John thinks the old man (Gus) is just a bum who broke into Mr. Pignati's house. It turns out that Gus is a Subway designer gone broke and force into retirement. The events in this book start 2 months afterthe Pigman's death. John and Lorraine are writing this book some time in the future and are foreshadowing the events after the Pigman's death. I am currently on page 125

The last book I read was The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. Examples of foreshadowing in the book would be that they knew Sets objective was to destroy North America. They knew they had to stop him they just were not sure how and if they were going to be able to. In the book Set is defeated and peace is restored which is always the fate in the Egyptian stories. I have finished the book and I would definitely recommend this book to any classmate interested in it.

twilson2 said...

@astine2 I like how that book also has a good example of irony in it. Sounds interesting.

The last book that I read was 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I would definantly recommend this book. It was amazing, however it was really sad and made you think really deep. An exapmle of forshadowing in my book was at one point in the videos that Hannah left for the main charater Clay before she killed herself. She was talking about how the main reason she killed herself was beacuse of something that happened at a party and then she immediantly started talking about another character named Bryce. This made it seem like Bryce would come up in the later videos and have something to do with the party because she talked about them one after another with basically no pause.

One of the biggest foreshadowings, was when Carl lee was arrested, i knew it was going to happen because he shot a cop on accident. I would kind of reccomend the book to the class, because it has som good parts in it.

The last book I've read was The Seer of Shadows by Avi. It was 208 pages long. There was a lot of forshadowing in this book, and one of the examples is when Mrs. Von Macht said to the ghost of Ealenora "Don't worry, Fredrick won't bother you anymore!" It was a hint that she killed Fredrick so the ghost would appear. Once I got further into the book I realized she did end up killing Fredrick. This book is historical fiction,and I reccomend this book to anyone who likes scary books. It is a great and suspencful book that you just can't put down!

The last book I read was Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. It is the third book in The Hunger Games series and I would definetly recommend it to everyone. One example of foreshadowing was when the evil President Snow reminded Katniss that they had made a deal to tell each other the truth. He then told her about President Coins plot to take over Panem. Eventually Katniss found out that this was true and kills her.

Ninth Grade Slays by Heather Brewer
I would recommend this book to people who like vampire books. In my book there was not much forshdowing but when vlad was dreming he dreamed about being chased by a vampire slayer. So, that could be some forshadowing. Also, when he was thnking about the snowball dance he wanted to ask merideth and then when he did she had already asked someone. That could show dont wait to long to ask someone something. So my book doesnt have much forshadowing in it.

The book I am currently reading is called Copper Sun by Sharon Draper. I am on page 62. A moment of foreshadowing in this book is when Amari saw other villagers coming toward her village and she knew that they were not good people.She knew this from what her father had told her. What ended up happening was the villagers were in fact bad and they killed all of Amari's family and lots of people in her village. So far I would recommend this book because its really good and suspensful.

I wouold recommend this book, it is very well written.

My last book I read was The List, by J.A. Konrath and this book is the PERFECT example of a page-turner!!! People who have a blue tattoo in the shape of a number, on their left heel, are mysteriously getting murdered by the three most dangerous killers in history. Anyways, there are a ton of events that could be foreshadowed in this book. For instance, Joan is one of the people who was attacked, but survived. So when her friend, Marty, was crying on the phone begging her to come over, but he wasn’t telling her what was wrong, I instantly knew that it was a trap. Well, obviously, the killer probably caught him and was forcing him to beg Joan to come over so they could catch her. That is just one of the many foreshadows that you can make in this thriller!

I am currently reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. I am on page 71 and really enjoying it. An example of foreshadowing in my book would be when Julie was up in the big oak tree, looking out at the view when she heard bulldozers coming to tear it down. Then she saw Bryce and his friend coming and she tried to make him join her, but when he didn't she realized how different of a person he was. Also another example is when Bryce first moved across the street and was caught holding hands and looking into Julies eyes, or as Julie would call it "her almost first kiss." I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading a true romantic story.

Khaldeman2 said...

The last book I read was Extras by Scott Westerfeld. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes futuristic books. An example of foreshadowing in my book is when in the beginning Aya and the sly girls find a hidden door in a tunnel. After they search through it, they think someone is trying to take over the world. The “monkey-surges” tell them they’re not but Tally believes they are trying to destroy the world. To find out if they do or not you’ll have to read the book.

A Feast for Crows by George R. R. Martin, page 807
One form of foreshadowing in my book was two books in the making. In the last book, one of the council lords was always coughing. During this book, he started to cough up blood. Now, when Queen Cercei wants to use him for something, he's in his deathbed at the worst time. This causing Cercei to blame Maester Pycelle and he gets sent to the black cells in the dungeon.

The last book I read was Twisted.The author was Sarah Shepard. An example of foreshadowing in this book would be when the girls (Emily,Aria,Spencer,and Hanna) went to jamacia and met a girl who they thought was Alsion.Previously before they went to Jamacia the person who they thought was "A' had died in a housefire. It isn't till then until they realize that they are terribly wrong. This is an example of foreshadowing bacause after this occurs "A" sends messages to them again,the event that occured in Jamacia is all over the news and the girls feel like they are in danger once again.I would reccommend this book to anyone that likes mystery,surprising turns and a storyline that makes you want to keep reading. This book was suspensful and I really enjoyed it.

But the next day julies husband dies and she becomes really depressed. The day of his funeral a box shows up at her door. When she opens the box a dog is inside with a note. the note said: To my lovley Julie, im sorry i didn't tell you that I was dieing but i want you to have this dog to get over your sadness. I love you so much love, Mike(her husband. This is such a great book but it really sad.

Foreshadowing was when the two main characters Gale and Brian got drafted to the same football team and tried out for the same position. It foreshadowed that they were gonna be best friends or enemies.

The last book I read was Airball My Life in Briefs. The author is L.D. Harkrader. One example of foreshadowing is when the main character Kirby Nickel finds a picture in his attic of a character that he would later meet in the story. I would recommend this book to people who like to read about sports. I would especially recommend this to people who like basketball.

the last book I read was A Crack in the Sky. It was written by Mark Peter Hughes. One example of foreshadowing was the main character's pet mongoose was reading a book, This hinted she was of a higher intelligence. I would recommend this book to the class

Those books always seem to be long and drawn out, does that ever get frustrating?

@astine2
I never could read that series, way too over-detailed

@ejjones1
I read that book, wouldn't the fact that the timer on the case, in the prologue, going off be foreshadowing?

The last book I read was Through the Hidden Door by Rosemary Wells. An example of foreshadowing in my book was when Snowy and Barney were heading to the cave and Barney said several times that he felt something wasn't right or that they were being followed. Snowy being the smarty that he is said that if someone was his microphone would pick it up, though there was still a fishy sense in the air. As predicted they were being followed, and it led to them being attacked in the cave unsuspecting what lay ahead of them. The foreshadowing that was laid down showed pretty much exactly what was going to happen.

astine2, I'm reading the first book of that series! Have you read all of the series so far?

The last book I read was EVERLOST by Neal Shusterman. One example of foreshadowing of this book is when someone in everlost crush its fortune cookie, it actually happens what little paper says. For example, Ally crushed McGill's fortune cookie secretly, it said Look behind you. Few seconds later, McGill found her stealing and crushing his fortune cookie and stood behind her. Ally realized that fortune cookie is sort of an warning about future. I would recommend this book, especially who likes a story between live and death with some little adventures.

Title: The Son of Neptune
Page: (finished)
Author: Rick Riordan
I know a few pieces of foreshadowing in this book. One is that Hazel wouldn't go into detail about the monsters coming back to life in minutes or hours. Two; Frank tried to figure out what his power is, and one of the clues was "You can be anything." And Three; people thought Percy was Greek since he was... different. this is all i could remember since i took my book home.

the last book i read was percy jackson and the lightning theif.by rick riordan.i recommend this book its very exciting and has alot of adventure quest type stuff in this book.the only thing about the book that i didnt like is that the begging wasnt as interesting as i thought. when i look back in the story i think about how hard it was for percy he to go on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, and has to travel across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the bolt of Zeus

The last book I read read was WWII Heros (I forgot who the author was). I would recommend this book because it gives us the great courage of these brave heroes and their struggle to save thier country from total domination by the nazi party. When looking back one form of foreshadowing was when Jack a 14 year old marine got into the military and when he was close to fighting the japenease the army found his letter that he sent to his girlfriend stating that he was only 14.

The last book I read was Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. I would recommend this book to my classmates since it was very interesting. Looking back, I guess the whole thing foreshadowed that no one would really listen to Melody. She is the main character of the story, she is the smartest in her school but nobody really knows that since she is disabled. She can't talk, write, or speak. So when she find out about a device that enables her to communicate, nobody thinks she can do much.

I thought "Flipped" had to do something with the ocean like "Flipper", but it actually sounds like a good book.

bferguson2;
the movies are great, but i think that the books are better. The books have more details than the movies so there is more of an understanding what's going on.
