Blog #7 Due: Monday 4/25/16

We just learned about abstract nouns and how they help you determine the theme of a text.
For this week's blog entry, tell us one of the themes of your independent reading book.
If you need help, look at your theme notes in your binder (page 26). You can also ask yourself "What did I (or the character) learn?"
Do not forget to comment on 2 classmates posts. Make sure to include the title of your book, the author, and what page you are currently on. Your response should be at least 5 sentences.

The book I am reading is Last Shot by John Feinstein. I am on page 10. The theme of this book is mystery. I believe this because it talks about something that happened at the final four. The main character has been trying to get recruited and just now got recruited to play in the final four.

My books is called Wereworld Rise of the Serpents by Curtis Jobling. I am on page 193 and im about 1/3 through my book and so far the theme seems to be always stay positive. There was one character who went negative and became evil and there were the others who stayed positive and stayed good. The protagonist stayed positive and he has almost reached his goal.

The book I am reading is Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb and I just finished my book. The theme of my book is to never give up in something you believe. In many scenarios the characters in my book were put in difficult positions. But they never gave up in their plans and beliefs. The pushed through and persevered. They never gave up and they accomplished what they set out to do.

Is that the manga because I dont think that could really be counted as reading. It's just pictures and 1-2 sentence phrases.

The book I just read was, "The Battle for Skandia," ("Ranger's Apprentice #4) by John Flanagan and I finished the book. The theme of this book was you can overcome any opponent no matter how difficult. In this story, Skandia was under a threat, and the opponent has rarely been beaten. The main character Will had a brilliant idea, and his idea, with a lot of persistence, helped win the war. Although Will couldn't of done it without his friends and mentor.

@NHerring4 that's a beautiful theme!

In "Wings of Fire" book 2 by Tui T. Sutherland the focused on main character, Tsunami. In this book I think the theme is independence, because Tsunami learns and realizes that her and her sister do not need to be royalty to get what they need.

@jtrumpy

I don't think that Action-Adventure is the type of theme that was looked for, I think it was meant what was the lesson, Acton-Adventure would be the genre.

I am reading “Spirit Animals” by Maggie Stiefvater. I am currently on page 174. One theme in my book is friendship. Although at times it doesn’t seem like it, they all need one another. Since they have friendship they are able to work as a team, which will allow them to defeat Zeriff. This is why the theme friendship in a big deal in this book.

I really like the message that your book has, I might just read it because of this.

I am currently reading The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau and I am on page 131. One of the themes so far in this book is “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Cia’s roommate at the Testing Center is very outgoing and friendly. She is very confident with her testing and believes she will pass. You would never think that she would commit suicide but when she didn’t show up to dinner Cia went to look for her and found her hanging from a light fixture. She never said anything or even gave a hint about being suicidal but she ended her life even though that thought never crossed anyone’s minds.

I feel that is also a common theme in everyday life.

My book is “blood is Thicker” the page I’m on is 35. In my book the readers wants you to understand is that blood is thicker than friends like family is important than anybody. And my character learn that because when him and his cousin got into it and had their problems they had to realized they are family they shouldn’t be fighting with each other. They setting of this book is in Chicago at his cousin house. The theme was mostly about knowing your family should come first before friends.

I am currently reading a book called Rules by author Cynthia Lord and I am on page 25 and so far I have learned that the sister is having a hard time with acceptance. The theme so far is that just because a person has a problem doesn't mean its a burden. The brother clearly has a disability and she doesn't want to accept that although that is her brother and she should love him regardless of the circumstance she doesn't want to accept it. The brother clearly has autism and being that they are neglected children nobody really cares but the sister and although she cares she has a hard time accepting that he is disabled. I feel that as time goes on she will accept it.

That seems like a good theme and the theme is also very true.

I’m reading Legend by Marie Lu and imp on page 111. One theme so far in the book is don’t judge a book by its cover. I can tell this because in one of the scenes of the book a small inexperienced looking girl turned out to be a great fighter when she beat a bigger girl after getting stabbed. She also turns out to be a high class police and doesn’t know she’s being helped by the one she’s hunting. But he doesn’t know she’s hunting him and she doesn’t know what he looks like.

I just finished reading "An Abundance of Katherines" by John Green. I think one of the themes found in this novel is individuality. The main character,Collin, strives for a sense of individuality and difference. He yearns to create a moment to be remembered by all. He wants to be different. Collin learns by the end of the novel that he didn't need a "eureka moment" or a Katherine to be happy.

I am currently reading the book “Plunked” by Michael Northrop. The theme is very hard to tell at this point of the book. But I would say that the theme right now would be, you do better when you do not worry about things. This happens when Jack gets up to bat trying to impress coaches he doesn’t do as well. Rather when he just goes up and is just focused on hitting the ball. This shows how that is the theme of my book.

I am reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. I am on page 29. One of the themes of the book is to find the American dream. The main character in my story is on his way to Vegas when he has an idea that he believes can make him rich and he is determined he can achieve it.

the book I am currently reading is alligent by Veronica Roth and I am on page 182. I think the author probably would research characteristics of petiole because they have to be strong to live in the world at this point. I also think she probably researched about futuristic technologies because of all of the new stuff the book introduces. the book is all based on factions, so I'm sure she also had to research factions to divide the people up with.

jtrumpy02 that book sounds interesting
ajgood6 the book sounds great

I am reading the book Blindsided by Priscilla Cummings and I am on page 53. The theme of the story is that change can come in an instant or over time, but you still won't be ready for it. The book talks a lot about change and her transition between her loss of sight. This taught the main character that its okay to not like change or cry if things go bad, and that she just needed to accept it and move on. Grieving over any lose won't change anything.

brivera4 said...

WDyke6 That sounds like a good theme to have in a book.
