Blog #16 Due: Monday 5/5/14

Post the title of the book you're reading, its author, and the current page you are on.

Almost all fiction authors have to do some kind of research before they write their novels. For example, JK Rowling might have researched historical sites in London and different creatures from mythology. Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games series, might have researched different types of weapons or survival skills. The author of Twilight researched Native-American traditional stories.

Tell me something that you think your author researched before he or she wrote your novel. Explain why you choose this (how it relates to your novel). Your response must be at least 5 sentences.

I was reading Divergent by Veronica Roth and I finished the book. Veronica probably would have researched the human mind and how people act. I believe she studied the human mind because she was able to separate the society in her book. Veronica had to been able to know how most people act to certain situations and made different factions (groups). She knew that most people were either selfless, peaceful, honest, intelligent, or brave.

I am currently reading Paper Towns by John Greene and I am on page 254. In this book, the author probably had to do a lot of researching. They traveled a lot around the city of Orlando so he had to know all streets and buildings. They also went on a road trip to New York to a very small town there called Agloe. He would have had to figure out how long it would take to drive from Florida to New York and all the cities and states they drove through.

I am still reading “The House of Hades” by Rick Riordan and I am on page 404. This book is the fourth out of five (“The Blood of Olympus” book five comes out October 7th!) in the Heroes of Olympus series. Before reading that series I read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series which ends three months before the next series starts and contains some of the same characters. Anyway, these books all REVOLVE around Greek and Roman mythology so the author OBVIOUSLY did research on it. He even adds a glossary at the end of the book for all the Greek and Roman terms. During the Heroes of Olympus books, the characters are constantly repeating mythological history. For example, Frank needs to prove he is worthy of his father Mars’s help. In order to do that he needs to show he is as good as the hero Horatius by defeating all of the katobleps monsters in the city Venice. This is only one of many ancient challenges demigods such as Frank have to overcome. So to answer the question . . . Ya. Rick Riordan probably had to do A LOT of research on Greek and Roman mythology.

I'm currently reading Peter and The Shadow Thieves by Ridley Pearson. I am on page 325. This book is based off the classic fairy talk Peter Pan except with a little twist of shadow thieves who try to invade and destroy. I'm most certainly positive that Ridley Pearson had to research some background on the fairy tale Peter Pan. All in order to make the story seem more like the original but with the twist Ridley adds to it. He probably searched more about the island and the characters that play a big role in Peter Pan to again, make it seem more like the original. Without this research, Ridley's book, Peter and The Shadow Thieves would be very distant in character and setting as the classic original, Peter Pan.

Great job MRossi4! I'm sure Rick Riordan did lots of research on Greek and Roman mythology!

I’m reading “Insurgent” by Veronica Roth and I’m on page 23. Veronica Roth probably had to research a lot of topics. I think she researched different types of wars because, in the book the factions are going to war. She probably also had to research emotions and human psychology for her characters and how they act and feel in the book. She probably had to research the future as well to create the different world that is “Insurgent”.

I am reading the lost conspiracy written by Frances Hardinge. And I am on page 228. My author Frances would have researched ancient tribal rituals and different islands. I say she would learn these things because it envolves tribes. The second this she would research would be different islands because everyone in the book lives on an island.

Right now I am reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, by J.K. Rowling, and I am on page 239. I think that J.K. Rowling did do some research, not on weapons, but on the way that people from England spoke. I think to be able to grasp all of the colloquialisms that British people have. I also think that Rowling did a lot of research on mythology, mostly because in her books, she uses creatures such as mermaids, giant spiders, griffins, dragons, centaurs, giants, etc. and to know so much about the creatures. For example, how they look, how they behave, how they eat, and how they present themselves. So, all that information isn't just common knowledge to most people. I think she did do so much research that she could make an entire four paragraphs about singular dragon’s characteristics. That is amazing about the amount of work and long hours that these authors put into their books.

I am reading The Restaurant at The End of The Universe by Douglas Adams and I am on page 112.
I honestly can’t think of anything the author might have researched. All of the places and more descriptive or uncommon words have been made up by the author. He could have done a little research on meaningless words from other authors to use like pangalactic and polaritometer. Otherwise I can’t think of much he could have researched. He had a creative enough mind to make up most of the locations and various planet and city names to not need research.

The book that I am currently reading is The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, I am on page 267, the author of this book is John Flanagan. The things I thing my author searched before writing this book is fighting skills, and weapons. I think he looked this stuff up before writing this book because the place Nihon-Ja is going to war with another country and wants to win. Lastly, if Nihon-Ja wins the war they would be able to take the land and build more places to be safe. That is what i think my author researched before writing the book.

I am currently reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, and I am on page 56. The author of this book might of research a lot of things, one thing he probably researched would be certain types of cancer. Once he found the certain type of cancer he wanted to write about he probably did more research on the cancer he chose. He also probably researched facts about support groups, and if it actually works or things like that. Lastly another thing he could research would be certain things about love and love tragedies. I think he would look up all those things because they are the main things that happen in this book, and the main topics throughout the book.

The book I am currently reading is called Buddy by M.H.Herlong, and I am on page 97. M.H.Herlong probably research about animals, but most likely dogs! This book is mainly evolved around dogs, which is the main reason why I chose it. Yes, I strongly agree that the author did some searching about animals, but then I also think she researched the effects of an injury for a poor animal. The reason I say that is because in my book the dog, Buddy has an injury that then leads him to only having 3 legs, instead of four. The author had to do great research, because the book is excellent!

The book that I am currently reading is In a Heartbeat by Loretta Ellsworth. In a Heartbeat I think that the author had researched stuff about heart transplants, figure skating, and the procedure on how heart transplants work and manufacture. For the heart transplant she may have researched different types of hearts, and how different kinds work. She also may have researched you preformed the first heart transplant. For figure skating she probably looked at different styles of figure skating were it originated and how to play it. I choose these two, because the book is about a girl named Amelia who needs and gets a heart transplant. And it as well talks about the other girl Eagan and her favorite sport figure skating and what she does and her competitions.

I am reading a walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks and I am on page 184. I think my author had to research things about cancer. The main character Jamie had leukemia and was going to dye in a couple months. Also, the setting of the book is in 1958, so people back then had less of a chance surviving cancer. He probably had to research what it was like hang cancer back then. Another thing was side affects of cancer. In the book he describes how Jamie started to get weaker and a lot skinnier.

I think the author of my book would have researched castles and magic. I think this because Charlie’s school is a castle and most of the book takes place in the school. I also think she researched magic to because Charlie and the red king family all have magical abilities. I am reading Charlie bone and the invisible boy. I am on page 75. And the author is Jenny Nimmo.

The book I am currently reading is Needful Things by Stephen King. I am on page 109. I think that my author would research locations in Maine because in his story the main setting is in a small town in Maine. He probably had to look up maybe the weather in Maine, and maybe about Small Towns located in Maine. So that's why I think he would research Maine.

I am currently done reading Plunked by Michael Northrop. Page none. I would have to say that my author has probably researched the background of baseball before he wrote the book. I think that because he wrote a baseball book and you cant write a baseball book without actually knowing what baseball is. So far Michael has done a really amazing job by knowing what baseball is all about.

I am currently reading ‘kissed by an angle’ by Elizabeth chandler and I’m on page 318. My book consist of angels and spirits, when Chandler was writing the kissed by an angel series I think that she would have to research things like theories on how angels see things and what angels are thought to do while they are here on earth. I also think that she would have to do research on what it truly feels like to mourn a close loss. (or use her own experience) The reason why I think that she would have to research those things because not many people know what it feels like to mourn a loss and even more so to be an angle. Both things do not come so easily.

I am currently on page 286 of Perfect Season written by Tim Green. The thing I think Tim Green researched before he wrote Perfect Season is the IRS. I think Tim Green had to research the IRS because in the book Troy had 5 million dollars. That money was taken from him by the IRS because of his father. Even after the money was taken he still had to pay the income taxes since he technically still owned the money.

I just finished The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. I think that the author of my book had to research lots of different things in order to write this book. He probably had to research the different types of cancer and the treatments for it. Also since in the book they go to Amsterdam he probably had to research Amsterdam and the different types of places to go. Another thing that he could have maybe had to research is different types of living conditions that certain cancer kids had to live in.

I was reading A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, and I've finished the book. To write this book, I think that Charles Dickens would have had to research a lot about the French revolution. Because he is writing about it in such detail, he would have done extensive research on all the main events of the French revolution. He also would have had to research all about the personal lives of people during the revolution. I also think he would have had to research how the English reacted to the French Revolution, because some of his main characters are English, and very involved with the revolution. One more thin he would have had to do research on would be how the French revolutionaries communicated with each other in secret.

I am currently reading a book called shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. I am on page 241. if the author of my book was going to search up certain things for the book shiver they would probably be wolves, relationships, and werewolves. Wolves because she has to describe what the wolfs do all winter. A relationship because Sam and Grace are dating and they go through their ups and downs. And last but not least she had to search things about werewolves because Sam, Grace, Beck, Ulrik, Shelby, and Paul are all werewolves so the author would have to get some of the details to explain how they change and why.

In the book, he always refers back to when John Elway played and he says that he wants to be just like him. Also he had to research present quarterback statistics for right now. He does that because his brother was said to be as good as them and he did a comparison between the two.

I am currently reading the book “Bioshock: Rapture” written by John Shirley and I am on page 270. I think the author researched the ocean and the sea creatures that live at low depths because the city is built at an extreme low depth. The author must have also researched pressure and how it affects structures at different depths in the ocean. He must have researched chemicals and toxins because a leak of chemicals mutated sea slugs into a slug that holds genetic powers capable of re arranging DNA. He might have also researched genetics and DNA of humans to find ways to incorporate the genetic abilities and enhancers from the slugs.

I am reading Needful Things by Stephen King. I am currently on page 222 of 745. The author of this book would have had to research thrift shops and antique shops to find out what one might find in a those shops But some of Stephen King’s books take place in the 1930s and 20s. Some research might have been needed to know different things about different places in those specific time periods. But most of Stephen King’s books take place in Maine and he has lived in Maine for most of his life. He does not need to know anything about Maine since he already lives there.

The book I am reading right now is The Hypnotists by Gordon Korman and I am on page 111. This book is about this 12 year old boy who can hypnotize people without realizing it. I think the author would have to do researches on hypnotism. How it's done, what you do, and the side effects. Although some of them could me made up. He also had to do research on famous people. Because in the book, there's this guy that has his picture taken with all the famous celebrities and President. So he had to research what they did and how they were famous. He might also need to do research on basketball if he doesn't play that sport. Cause the main character, Jax, plays basketball.

If the author hadn't researched Peter Pan, there would probably be very few details about the characters and the setting.

In my book, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman I think the author could of researched horror and mystery stories. The book leaves a lot of suspense for the reader showing that the author has experience in writing. The book was awarded by Newbery meaning he had to put a lot of effort in it. the book mimics what I would be like if this would of happened to you so I think he could of had a background on this topic of books. last the book has a tragedy in the begging of it meaning the author knows how to start the book off.

In my book, The Time Fetch, by Amy Herrick (completed), I would say that the author had to do research on theories about entropy, time, etc., and also some research about solstices. This is because those are all key points in my book, and they are what the majority of the plot was based on. Knowing this, I'm guessing my author had to do at least a little research on those topics, since there are things about the workings of the solstice, and also ancient beliefs regarding it that I don’t think the author would just make up. I also think that, because of the nature of this book, the author would have had to look up several theories on how time works, and what happens when time DOESN’T work. The final one, entropy, is another one that seems rather important in the book, and I can't really see how the author would have made up all the stuff talked about.
