Blog #8 Due: Monday 3/16/15

Describe, in detail, the setting of your book. Where and when does the story take place?  How do you know?

If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time, how would the plot change?

Make sure you include book title, author and current page number. Do not forget to comment on two classmates post.

I am currently reading The Story of Me by Rachel Kasey and I am on page 69. The main character is a 14 year old girl named Ashley who lives in Boston. She is musically talented by playing the piano and plans on going to the Juilliard school of Performing Arts for college. If this story took place in China and her family was poor, this would effect the plot greatly. If her family was poor, her parents could never buy a piano, so Ashley would never have played the piano so she would never want to go to Juilliard. In the book, Ashley's family aren't poor, but if Ashley got a scholarship, then her family wouldn't have to pay for college.

I am currently reading Divergent by Veronica Roth, pg.100. The setting of the book is in future Chicago, in the future. If the story took place some other time like present day the plot would drastically. The plot of the book wouldn't include micro chips and aptitude test with different factions. It wouldn't include leaving your parents.

I am currently reading "Black Duck" by Janet Taylor Lisle, and i am on page 76. The main character is a boy named Ruben who lives in Rhode Island in the year 1929. He found a dead body that washed up on shore, and wants to explore and find out what happened and who killed the man that washed up on shore. If this took place in Georgia, most people wouldn't care about it they would just keep walking and focus on something else. If the plot of the book was in present day Georgia, maybe the man wouldn't have even got killed, and the characters wouldn't want to investigate.

I am reading Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle, and I'm on page 273. The setting of my book is Gracetown, NC and the biggest snow storm in 50 years is occurring. The story takes place in December around Christmas time in 2014. I know this because the book is realistic fiction written last year, and all 3 stories involve something Christmas related. Christmas presents, Christmas morning, Christmas dinner, etc. Gracetown is just like any norma small town. There's stores everyone that the town's people easily recognize, a local high school, (Where most of the main characters go to.) and there's the one crazy person who everyone knows. (In the case of this story, it's the tinfoil man. He's always wrapped in tinfoil, and whenever he is questioned for wearing tinfoil around his entire body, he responds with, "What tinfoil?" )

The whole book is about this girl is not spoke to cross "The Line" but she wants to see what's across the line. So if the setting chanced the whole story line would chance. And there would be no line.

I am currently reading "The People of Sparks" by Jeanne Duprau, and I am currently on page 20. The main characters of the story is Lina and Doon and they live in an underground village named Ember. They are both trying to help their village from war. The city also has inly 3 leaders. If this setting was taken somewhere else there might be more than 3 leaders. The people in the underground city might also not be at war.

I am currently reading Stung by Bethanny Wiggins and I'm on page 77. I am not sure where the place is doing taking place because my character woke up in the beginning of the story not knowing anything. She is just suffering in this camp where she is kept hostage. But if there was a different setting, I don't think I would change the plot of the story because the setting of this book (as I can tell) is not really important or "well known."

I'm reading Variant by Robinson Wells and am on page 201. The setting of the book is in a school that's basically a cage for the students. It's surrounded by a barbwire fence and a forest. The time seems pretty modern, because they have computers and tablets. I feel like if it was in an earlier time it wouldn't work because they would be able to find who's forcing them to do this or escape.

I am currently reading "Percy Jackson:The Sea Of Monsters" by Rick Riordan, I am on page:50. The setting of my book takes place in high school, though it does not exactly say where. The story takes place just a few weeks before summer, where Percy goes to his summer camp. If it did not take place at the end of school, it probably would not be actiony. If there was no camp half-blood (where Percy goes over the summer because he is a half-blood) then the story would be completely lost. The first book was based upon the camp because it describes when Percy first shows up to the camp.

I am reading Passion by Lauren Kate and I am on page 132. The story takes place in many different places, so I will describe the setting she is in right now. Right now, Luce and Daniel are in Helston, England. I know this because it said it in the beginning of the chapter. She is working as a kitchen maid so the setting is a big dirty kitchen with a big stack of dishes to do. The people around her are all dressed in fancy clothes and she is not used to it. If it took place in a time where Luce was used to everything, it might not be as weird and unnatural to her.

the book i am currently reading is unstoppable by Tim green.i am currently done.the story is about a foster kid named Harrison who has always had the passion to play pro football and was given a chance to moving into a foster home and his new dad is a popular football coach. the story takes place on a football field in an unnamed area that was not stated in the book however the area was filled with farmhouses so it has to be in a city full of landscaping areas.if time and place of the story changed the plot would have Harrison just dreaming about playing pro football in some foster home.Harrison would have never been were he is right now in the book.

The book i am currently reading catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and i am on pg. 204. There' really no specific setting in my book, the book takes place in a lot of different places. But there in a district and its called district 12. There's a lot of different people in district 12, it's really just a big war between all the people. If there was an actually setting and a real place and the story would be more realistic then it is now.

I am reading Dangerous Waters by Gregory Mone I am on page 23. The story takes place on the Titanic during the early 1900's.I say the plot change would be the final book being stolen but I also got my sights set on when. The Titanic will start sinking that would surely change the story the whole dramatically. If the ship sunk the whole idea of protecting and stealing the book would change to a life or death situation.

I am currently on the book called "Far Far Away" by Tom Mcneal, page 200. The author has had Jeremy in the setting of his bookstore more often than anywhere else. His family's bookstore is a small two-story building. The bookstore is filled with copies of his grandfathers book on all of the shelves. The two bedrooms are upstairs. The bedrooms are Jeremy's and his fathers. In Jeremy's room, there is an attic. Jeremy is in the attic more than his own room. The attic is a small, dusty room with fairy tale books covering the shelves. Jeremy has read almost all of these books.

I am currently reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and on page 95. The setting of he book is that certain people from each district get picked to have a battle kinda survival thing. whoever wins, there district gets like a prize or something. I'm pretty sure the book takes place in the future. I know this because they have theses weird futuristic jets and like theses flying little robot cameras. If the story were to change it would probably go back into the past. The plot wouldn't really change that much. Because they would still have the Hunger Games but just not as advance.

I know this book is in modern time because it seems just like what happens today, the schools sound like our schools and when Hayley is with her friends they talk about the same things that we talk about today. If this book was set in a different place then it would be the same but if it was in a different time then it would be different. If the book was set in a different time the plot would change because it it is supposed to be realistic fiction and not historical fiction or scifi.

The main problem in this book is that Mia is all alone because she got in a car accident and her family died. He is then accused of stealing Zeus’ master lightning bolt and must find it and return it to Zeus in 10 days before it’s too late. If this story took place in Florida, and if he wasn’t accused, then it would more than likely make a big change in the plot of the story. If it took place in Florida then Percy and his friends would have an even longer adventure than they already had. If Percy wasn’t accused then he wouldn’t have these problems he’s having now. The only reason he WOULD go to Olympus would probably be to confront his father who abandoned him.

I'm reading the Alchemist and I'm on page 117. My story takes place in the middle east area above Africa. I know this because the the main character talks about going to the river crossing to Egypt. He also talks about his travels through deserts and small towns. The main character is a shepherd who talks of kings and royalty and strong religion and culture in his area, and this lets me know the story isn't based in modern time. If the story was in a different setting it would be a whole different book i think this because a large majority of the story so far is based on the culture and environment of the middle east and wouldn't make much sense elsewhere.

I am reading The 100 by Kass Morgan and I am on page 20. My book is set in a post-apocalyptic world after a nuclear war. In this future, what is left of humanity lives on spaceships in Earth’s orbit. On these ships, all crimes are punishable by death, but only if you’re over 18 years old. If you commit a crime before that age, then you are kept in prison until you turn 18. When the book starts, 100 of these “juvenile delinquents” are being sent to Earth on what is most likely a suicide mission to see if the surface is still radioactive. I know this from the back of the book, which explicitly says all of it. Since this book is a post-apocalyptic, changing the time or setting would change the entire plot.

The book I am currently reading is “Four” by Veronica Roth, and I am on page 153. The setting of my book is what America would be like if we were in a enclosed environment, and we were separated in to factions. The factions are Candor, Erudite, Amity, Abnegation, and Dauntless. Candor is when you are kind and tell the truth. Erudite is the one who value logic. Amity is the farmers. Abnegation are selfless and dedicated to helping others. Dauntless is the police and soldiers. The setting is somewhat worn out and they aren’t allowed to leave. If they were in a different setting and had different rules the book wouldn’t have anything the same.

Not to many states have swamps like Florida and Mississippi, the only reason I think it's not Florida because the book "hoot" was based in Mississippi also. I think he is 15 because in the very first page it states, "her third period biology class" , most schools don't teach biology till they are in 9th grade or so and most people are 15 by then. Right now they are just leaving from a terrible hotel they stayed for the night. All of this is happening in the month of June according to page 1. If they were not leaving from a terrible hotel and instead a better one, then maybe the family wouldn't be in a bad mood.

I am reading The Maze Runner by James Dashner, and im on page 30. The book takes place in a place called the Glade, where only boys are trapped for some reason. Surrounding the Glade is a giant maze that shifts around every night. Then spooky monsters come out. Oh lawdy hold me. If this was set in, say, my school, then the guys would all have been killed super fast by the monster things. Fun times all around. This books is really dry, actually. I give it a 12/43, dont recommend.

I am currently reading Rules by Cynthia Lord and I am on page 34. The setting in this book is present day Maine. I know this because this is stated in the beginning of the book. If the story took place in the future, it would change the plot dramatically. The main character in my book is a 12 year old girl named Catherine, who has to cope with her brother who was diagnosed with autism. His autism is essentially their entire family's main focus. So, if the future had some sort of treatment for autism, Catherine could lead a normal life like she had always wanted.

I am currently reading A Job From Hell by Jayde Scot and I am on page 59. The setting of my book takes place in Scotland. If the setting took place any where else maybe like Florida than the mansion wouldn't be so hidden and discrete all secret in the woods on a large hill. Also it wouldn't be as cold as it is in Scotland. This would effect the plot by the hole creepy vibe that the book gives you.

I am reading The City Of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau and I am on page 121. Ember City is a very dark and gritty place, actually quite depressing. We are not given a time when the story takes place. However, if the time were to change the plot would be different because right now, the lights in the city are all dying, If the story were in the past this wouldn't be a problem, and if the story is in the future they may just be living in darkness.

I'm finished reading The Kill Order by James Dashner. The setting of the book took place in Eastern United States, 13 years earlier. I know this because when I first open the book it says it on the far left side. If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time the plot really wouldn't change. The plot wouldn't change because every thing that happens in the book can happen in anytime and place.

I am reading "copper sun" by Sharon M. Draper, and I am on page 45. There are many different settings in this story, but one of them is the main character's village. If this was set in a different time period then it would alter the whole book because that's when slavery was popular and a everyday thing, so nowadays the things that happened back then would be non existent. Amari went through things that are illegal now. Also there aren't plantations anymore.

I am currently on page 256 of the book Flawless by Sara Shepard. The setting of my book right now is the Rosewood Day Elementary school parking lot. The story takes place in like 2007. I know this because that's when the book was made and it has hints in it like their phones Hanna has a Blackberry, and Blackberry's were more on the new side in 2007. If the setting were to change i thing that the plot would change because Hanna got hit by a car in the parking lot, and if they were in a building then that would be less likely to happen. What would happen would probably be like a BIG thing falling on her, or a person pushing her into something. Just something different and it wouldn't be the same.

The book I am currently reading is "Sapphique" and I am currently on page 76. The story takes place (so far) in a building and this man is showing his power with this tool/item called "Sapphique." I would say the time of year would be the early 2000s, if not late 1900s. The plot would not change if the setting took place somewhere else. Using what I've read so far the story would just be in a different location, no real change in the plot.

I am reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rolling, and I am on page 722. The setting I am in currently in is Hogwarts Astronomy tower in the middle of an O.W.L. Ordinary Wizarding Level. There are no indications what year the story takes place though if I had to guess I would say somewhere around 2000 or in the late 1900's. If the setting were to change I think the plot would change slightly because if they were not on the Astronomy tower they wouldn't have seen Hagrid attacked by six people, or seen Professor McGonagall get attacked by no less than four stunning spells. I fhtey had been inside they wouldn't have seen this and they wouldn't have their hatred for Dolores Umbridge increase by about five fold.

That's pretty cool Sbrown4

Hey Gglover2 is that book any good?

Eldest, Christopher Paolini, pg; 538
The book takes place in a place called Alagaesia in the mid-evil times. If the setting of the story changed I think that the whole story would be different, because in the story there is a boy who finds a dragon egg and it makes sense because in all the fairy tales that are taking place in this time there usually is at least one time that a dragon is mentioned. Now if you took the idea out of the story and put it in a present day like NYC it would be completely different, because you never hear about a dragon being found in central park. So yes the plot would change a lot.

I'm reading at this time is Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore and on page 52. The setting is a castle in the middle of a lush forest surrounded by mountains and a dessert. The story sounds like it's during the medieval age. People still live in kingdoms instead of cities, there is kings and queens, people use swords or bows as weapons, and castle are still being built. If the time and place changed then so would the plot and such. If it was in the future less people or important characters would die due to the lack of medical attention. No need for everyone to own and defend a farm or garden. Main characters would have an easier method of communicating with each other in times of enormous danger.

rcortes5: Nice job on everything and how it would change.

RRaisch6: Great job on telling what would happen if Ashley got the scholarship.

I am reading “33 Minutes” by Todd Hasak – Lowy, I am currently on page 20. The setting of my book is in a small classroom at an old beat down school. This story takes place in the present. I know because this school has everything our school has, it’s just a little smaller and a more rundown. If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time I think the plot would change a lot. It would change because a lot of technology we have today we didn’t have way back when, so it’d be a whole different story.

I am currently reading the book “Four” by Veronica Roth, and I am on page 59. The setting of my book is what would happen if the nation was divided and you couldn't really contact the other factions. The different factions are Erudite, Candor, Amity, Abnegation, and Dauntless. All the factions are used to do different things and have different strengths. In the story the setting is based in the future, and is set off from the rest of the country that still has all the old cities.if the book were based in a different setting that a lot of the story may not make sense.

The story takes place in 1889. I know this because in the very beginning of the book it states “late April 1889”. If my story took place in a different time frame than the Darlyn sisters wouldn’t be judged the way they are in my book. They are judged because they are young ladies who shoot guns, trick ride, shoot arrows, and knife throw. In today’s society that is considered as a skill not bad manners.

I am currently reading Game Changers by Mike Lupica, and I am on page 24. The main character is a boy named Ben McBain. The story doesn't have a set destination, but by context clues I believe it is in a larger town. The reason for this is because there are several middle schools in his area and there are tons of kids in there town. If the story took place in a different place like a small town there would be less competition, and there wouldn't be a big conflict.

I know it was 2003 because it said that he took out his mother old flip phone. If this book wasn't in modern day time and it was in the past, like around the 1600's, then there wouldn't be football. There would be like Jousting, or Archery, or Fencing, and with those sports, unless you fall of the horse while Jousting, then I don't think you can hurt your knee bad enough to be put in the hospital with the possibility of never being able to play again.

I am currently reading "Evercrossed" by Elizabeth Chandler and I am on page 120. The setting in the book begins to be a warm beach life type of thing. It's sunny, airy, and summery. That is only after she moves away from a horrific scene of the main character, Ivy's, boyfriend dies. The setting takes place in Cape Cod. The story overall takes place in modern day time. I know because it makes references of things we only have today. If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time, the plot would change a lot. The overall event that occurs in the story is Ivy moving to a place where anyone would die to go to. The point is to go from a bad place to the best place. If she went somewhere else in the story, the whole book would be very dismal.
