Blog #5 Due: Monday 9/30/13

Think about your current book and decide what your Author's Purpose is for writing (entertain, inform, persuade, explain).

With your Author's purpose in mind, what is your Author's Point-of-view (Perspective) on a topic in your book?
If you get stuck think about the video clips we watched in class.

Remember to include Book title, author, and current page number. Your response must be 5 detailed sentences and do not forget to comment at least twice on other posts.

I am currently reading The 5th Wave, by Rick Yancey. I am on page 19 out of 457. The author’s purpose for this writing was to entertain. I believe the author’s perspective on this topic was he enjoyed what he was writing and believed it was entertaining. Also, he in a way “became” the main character, Cassie, to inform people about her made up world and situation.

tbolton4 said...

@bking3 is that book any good?

The book I am currently reading is called Torn Away written by James Henegan. I am on page 176 out of 189 pages. I believe the author’s purpose for writing the book was to entertain but inform at the same time. Only because of the simple fact that it’s a made up story, but takes place in a time of real war. I also think the author’s perspective on the topic of the book is that he just simply believes, killing is not the answer. He says it plenty of times through the characters in the book.
Tbolton4; Great post, had everything it needed. Hope you get a one-hundred (:
Bking3; just remember to space after periods, include your author, be sure to proof read and you’ll be great!

I am currently reading Looking For Alaska by John Green. I am on page 60. The author's purpose for writing this book was to entertain. I believe that the author's perspective on famous people's last words is that he finds them very interesting because the main character, Pudge, memorizes them as a hobby. He has quoted them a lot throughout the book.
@bking3 That sounds like an interesting book. Good job!
@tmccray4 Great job on your blog! It was really detailed.

I am currently reading A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson and I am on page 274 out of 274. The authors purpose is to entertain readers about a funny story about some people who decided to go hiking on the Appalachian Trail. He includes funny things that happen to them and their experience as they go along more and more north. I think the authors perspective is that the Appalachian Trail is hard by how he describes it in the book and by how Bryson and Katz react to it as they hike along. I think he thinks that the trail is no piece of cake and takes time and patience to finish and that you need to be prepared unlike Bryson and Katz who just decided to go for their first time with out proper health conditions and or food. I am sure the author has done the trail before because of how he describes it in his book. He tries to get a message out to readers that a hike on the Appalachian Trail is not easy. That’s the authors perspective and purpose for writing A Walk in the Woods.

I am currently reading "The Fault In Our Stars" by John Green. I actually just finished it too. I think the authors purpose is to maybe to explain. The reason I say that is because in the book he is describing the strong love the two have for each other. I think the authors perspective is to show that no matter how young one person is that they could still be in love.

I’m reading “A tree grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith. I’m on page 420. The author’s purpose of my book is to entertain readers with a story about the life of a girl as she grows up. The author’s perspective about growing up is that it’s hard to grow up sometimes. There are ups and downs, tragedies and joyful occasions.

I am reading Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief written by Rick Riordan and I am on page 374. The purpose of this book is to entertain, the reason I say this is because the book contains fictional content that couldn't happen in the real world. For example, Percy’s Latin teacher throws him a pen sword that disintegrates his math teacher. Another reason that this book is entertaining and thrilling is because is it an adventure story, which draws the reader in with tension.

The authors’ purpose is to entertain. The authors point of view is that these people called the “angels of darkness”, that are an organization that has been trying to take over the world for thousands of years. Now he went to a sycoligist that promised to not to tell anyone what he is telling him, then he goes around and tells a man everything. Now Alfred is getting mad and running to his foster parents that think he is a psychopath, and the author shows that he isn’t. The book I’m on is Alfred Kropp the Seal of Solomon, Rick Yancey (he lives here in Gainesville Florida); I am currently on page 16.

In my book, Sasquatch, by Roland Smith I am on page 10 and I think the author’s purpose is to entertain. Even though the book is based on a creature that is a myth, the author doesn’t exactly attempt to inform you about the Sasquatch. He describes what it looks like but he doesn’t explain to you about its history or genetics. I believe the author is trying to entertain the reader because he provides a fast-pace story with lots of suspense. The author also includes some extra drama which helps tie the reader in even more. The author’s purpose in my book is defiantly to entertain.

In my book, Scarlet, by Marissa Meyer (page 312 out of 454), the author’s purpose is very obviously to entertain. I know this because it takes place far into the future, and involves a cyborg princess from the moon (this narrowed the possibilities of the genre quite a bit). The author’s perspective, however, is not quite so clear. Because the book has such a weird setting, there aren’t all that many things to compare this to in the day of right here and right now. One thing that the author might be trying to say, though, is that we shouldn’t judge people just because of them being different. Cinder (the cyborg princess from the moon [who is also an escaped convict and public enemy #1 by now]) is often made fun of, or looked down on, or hated, despised, wanted dead, or one of a thousand other negative things just because she’s different. Many of the other characters don’t take this too well, and they help Cinder, as well as forcefully changing the minds of those who don’t like her. They know that she deserves a chance to be like everyone else, and they see to it that she gets that chance. This is why I think that treating people fairly, even if they’re different, is one of the author’s perspectives.
@Dylan Brown: you had a good blog; I’ve heard a lot about that book before and really want to read it; but I couldn’t seem to find your author’s perspective. The purpose was there though, good job with that. Nice blog!
@aanzivino6: your blog was pretty good, too. I have actually read that book, and it was rather good. For some reason, however, I couldn’t find your author’s perspective either! Other than that though, good job!

The book I am currently reading is 'Sand Dollar Summer' by Kimberly K. Jones. I am on page 25 of 206. I think the author's purpose is to inform. I’m reading the book called Scarlet. I am on page 143 of 452. The author is Marissa Meyer. He authors purpose for writing scarlet is to entertain. First of all, it’s a fiction book with no facts in it so it can’t inform me. Also, the author doesn’t try to make me buy anything or introduce any ideas to me or make me want to do anything. And lastly it’s not explain because it doesn’t explain anything to me it’s only telling me a story. The point-of-view is 3rd person omniscient. There are several main characters and also 2 parts of the book and 2 plots that are separate from one another and the narrator knows every ones thoughts.

I am still reading Redwall by Brian Jacques and I am on page 96 out of 351. I think the author’s purpose is to entertain because the book is completely fictional and no elements of this book are used to inform, persuade, or explain. Part of the reason why is that the book is about personified animals, their way of life, and the struggles they go through. The view is third person omniscient because a single character does not narrate the whole time, nor does it use he, she, or I. Although the view changes from the antagonist side of the story to the protagonist’s side of the story the narrator still is not a character.

Dylan Brown I’ve heard of that book and I have thought of reading it, is it any good?

In the boy project by kami kinard and I think that the book is to mainly entertain. I would say that it is to mainly to entertain because of her witty comments and also that the way the book is setup with a bunch of boy charts. I also think that it is to entertain because when it says things like “Tabbi and I make up names for girls like colleen and when it came to her name I was arguing for keyboard.” When it says “but Tabbi said ‘Maybelline’ was more appropriate because in addition to wearing perfect nail polish, colleen wears a ton of makeup.” In the parts of my book when Kara and Maybelline get into it Kara normally backs down so I would say that the authors perspective is that its not always best to get into fight with your enemies or that you might lose or get embarrassed so might as well not fight back.

I'm book reading is It's not like I planned it this way, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, I'm on page 167. I believe that the author’s purpose is to entertain, because I think she is telling a story, but using her past experiences to let you know that everything might not always go as planned. The author perspective is to tell a story about a girl who thinks she has everything under control, but ends up not, and she has to learn from her mistakes, and has to learn that everything will not always go the way you may think so you can learn from your mistakes. I think that the authors purpose was to entertain because I could relate to it, and that in the book there is a valuable lesson to be learned. She also involved realistic events.

My new book The BFG by Roald Dahl The author’s purpose is to entertain, and I’m on page 24. I know for several reasons one being the book contains fantasy features, some being the book is about a one in a million friendly giant. Another reason I know it’s to entertain is because they’re apparently on an unknown country in the Atlantic Ocean that’s invisible from space. I know it’s not any of the others for its own reasons too. It’s definitely not to inform because it doesn’t state any facts and it’s certainly not trying to teach me anything. To persuade is also out of the question, that being because it’s not trying to get me to do anything and really not to buy something

The book I just finished reading was The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen. The Author's purpose is to entertain the readers. The book is about a orphaned boy, who really is a prince in disguise. The author is entertaining us about what happens to the boy, Sage/prince Jarold. Telling us about his life and what happens to him. This could also be informing, cause there are some facts about the past. But mostly it is entertaining.

I am currently reading, The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen and I am on page 324. I think the author wrote this book for many reasons but I think the main reason is to persuade. This is because this book is about a girl named Jessica, whose whole life revolves around running. But when she gets in a horrible accident on the way to a track competition, she loses her leg. She feels like her whole life is over but throughout the book she keeps hope that someday she will not only be able to walk but run. The author is trying to persuade the reader to never lose hope, even if your entire life as you know it is turned upside down and you lose the one thing that matters to you the most. The author is also trying to persuade you to not judge a book by its cover, no matter how blank it looks. In the book, Jessica meets a girl named Rosa, who has cerebral palsy but Jessica learn that Rosa is more than a handicap but an incredible person. I think everyone should read this book because it’s super inspiring and will definitely change the way you see life.

I am reading, “Rip Tide”, by Kat Falls, and am on page 107. The author’s purpose is to entertain, because it gives a science fiction effect with higher technologies and people living underwater. With that being said, in the topic of technology, she probably doesn’t believe we will live underwater. Even though, she is trying to infer that, she believes there will be some form of even higher technology, than the technology we have now. Therefore, we could live in water, (that’s what she is trying to infer, along with the technology idea) but we could also live in space, or another planet, based on the new technology.

I am currently reading A Kiss In Time by Alex Flinn, on page 20. His purpose would be to entertain readers because, it has kings and princesses,as well as curses. It's a simple love story, that everyone loves to read, because it makes your heart warm and happy. Also, the authors point-of-view would be the 1st person because , he is the main speaker and he uses I alot.
