Blog #9 Due: Monday 5/9/16

Describe, in detail, the setting of your book. Where and when does the story take place?  How do you know?
If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time, how would the plot change?

Make sure you include book title, author and current page number. Do not forget to comment on two classmates post.

  1. I'm currently reading Mary Downing Hahn's book, "Deep and Dark and Dangerous". I'm on page 80. The setting takes place in a lake house. The time period is modern times. If it were to take place in a different setting, it would make a major change. The title itself would change if it had a different setting, because it is referring to the dangerous lake in the book.

  2. the book im reading is woner woman. im on page 43 now. the setting takes place in the greek empire.also it takes place in the city of Gotham. i knew this because the story tells me. the plot would change if wonder woman's mom would have still been alive

  3. The book I was reading is named,"this world we live in" by Susan Beth Pfeffer and I am done with the book. My book's story would be very different if they were in a different setting, they probably would've already died at page 2 or the first book would end at page 2. The book takes place in our modern day world since they used to have electricity, technology, and all that good stuff. If they were located in the middle of a busy city and not the outer areas, they might have gotten diseases, gang threats, much violence, and maybe even more. Also, if they were located in a different state where volcanoes erupted everything would be even more worse.

  4. @mscott2 They'd probably be "low, light, and safe".

@tmwldon1 I "wonder" how Wonder Woman's life would've been like.

  5. I am reading The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau and I am on page 164. This book is a dystopian thriller that takes place very far in the future. The world is destroyed by the seven stages of war and then the rest of the population is separated into colonies. Testing is held in the capitol where the world was least affected by the war and where the cities are most advanced. If it was held in a different place the testing subjects could be totally different because the government would be focused on different issues.

The different areas they could live in would definitely change the book completely.

  8. My book is “The Frog Princess”, the author of my book is E.D. Baker, and I am on page 135. My book at the moment takes place in a pond. Because the princess just found the talking frog and is freaking out, but wants to turn him into a prince. The whole story would change because a frog is usually only near ponds or rivers. But if the plot did change the princess would probably never found the frog and then the story would have probably never happen.

  10. The book I’m currently reading is called “Unity” by Oliver Bowden, and I on page 106. I can tell this book takes place in France from1778-1794, because this book is a fictional diary based off the French revolution. In this book the author includes exact dates as well as places. He includes places like Queen Anne Square and Places des Vosges in this story. If the story was taken place somewhere else the story would be complete different because this story was heavily based on the time of the French Revolution. If he were to write in a different time or place most of the events that took place would have never happened.

  14. I am currently reading the book unnstoppable by Tim green and im on page 46. the setting of the book is a kid that had a rough childhood and was adopted. I dont think the story would be that differnt cause it would still be the same sittuation. It probaly just be some differnt people but it would all be the same cause just cause it would of been somewhere else that dont change nothing.

  16. The book I am currently reading is The Island of Dr. Libris by Chris Grabenstein and I am finished with the book. The setting of my book is an island in the middle of a lake with a bunch of fairytale characters. It takes place over the summer in present time. The book described the setting. If the setting was changed it wouldn't make much of a difference. There would still be fairytale characters running around.

  19. Daniel X book 3 written by James Patterson and I am on page 130!
The setting of the current book I am reading is in Portland, Oregon on a cold Saturday where an alien spaceship was fond at the Portland trailblazers’ stadium. And that is when Daniel comes to investigate. The reason why I know this is because. 1. I Read the book. 2. when ever it is about to tell us the setting it goes to narrator mode. And 3. At the beginning of every chapter I has a new setting.

  22. My book is Sit, Stay, Love by J.J Howard. Im currently on page 165. The setting in my book is at a dog shelter and at Cecilia's school. I know this because the book gives specific deatils on events happening. If the setting of my book was changed it would change the book drastically. The main character Cecilia wouldn't be the person she is now.

    @snolen6
    I love that book!

  23. The book I’m reading is Al Capone Shines My Shoes by Gennifer Choldenko and I’m on page 245. The book takes place on a small island off the coast of San Francisco, California. This takes place in August-September 1935. If the story happened in a different place, the inmates and people would acted differently. If the story happened at another time all of the people and how the prison was run would be different.

  26. The book that I am currently reading is Jungle of Bones by Ben Mikaelsen. I am on page 73. The setting of my story takes place in a dense jungle called Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is an exotic and remote jungle. I know this because the book tells you that the main character and his uncle are traveling in the jungle.

  29. I am currently reading Blood is thicker by Paul Langan & D.M. Blackwell and I am on page 90. My book takes place in Detroit, in the middle of summer. I know this because Hakeem’s family had to move from California to Detroit because of his father’s cancer. I know it is in the summer because Hakeem is helping his Uncle James at his mattress store every day. If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time, maybe Hakeem and his family wouldn’t have moved to Detroit because at one point in time Hakeem’s father didn’t have cancer.

  32. I am reading The possibility of no, by Kim Culberston, and I'm on page 200. The setting of my book is in San Diego. I know this because they are traveling and the book tells us. If the story takes place somewhere else then the plot would change because the main character would not be traveling to see her dad.

  33. i am reading diary of a wimpy kid old days by Jeff Kenny. i am on page 60. my setting of my book is at home.this is because in the book Greg and Rowley were trying weird experiments at home for school.but in this story my plot could change depending on where this story could take place next.

  34. I’m currently on page 24 of Unfriended by Rachel Vail. The setting of my book is modern day mostly at a middle school. I know this because they have iPhones and advanced things they wouldn’t have back then and they go to school. If my story took place in the past the plot would completely change because they wouldn’t have social media or even smart phones. If it took place in the future it probably wouldn’t even make sense. Also if it took place somewhere else then there wouldn’t be middle school drama.

  37. The book i am reading is Tomb Quest and i am currently on page 80 I like this book because it talks about Egypt and it includes mystery and adventure such as when Alex's mom disappeared. The reason why I like Egypt is because of their myths that they have. By Micheal Northrop and the setting takes place in a museum where Alex's mom works.Alex is slowly dieing and artifacts in his mom's museum are being stolen. When Alex's mom brings him back to life she didn't bring just Alex. She brought back five Dealth Walkers. They later find out that Al-dab'u has been stealing the artifacts. He isn't the only one. The Stung Man is a mummy and a artifact at the museum where Alex's mom works. He comes back to life. and Ren have to find Alex's mom and stop Al-dab'u and the Stung Man before its to late. Later on they find where they are hiding and defeat them.

  40. I am currently reading The Scorch Trials by James Dasher and I'm on page 170. The story takes place in a deserted city it kind of looks like new york just amusing from the movie. It is also futuristic because the have new guns and planes that are high tech that doesn't look like today planes. Because in the book when Thomas escaped the WICKED facility he got a gun from the guard that shot electric shocks without like today tasters they had to pick up the thing in the book he could keep shooting.

  42. The book I am reading is The Legend of Drizzt: Streams of Silver by R.A Salvatore and I am on page 8 in the prelude. The book happens in Icewind Dale I know this because the book tells me.If the book happened anywhere else the life of Bruenor would change because he is a dwarf who home, which is called mithral hall, was destroyed by a demon. Now Bruenor wants to take his home back so he, Drizzt, Cattie-Brie, and Regis decide to trek across Icewind Dale.

  45. The book is reading is "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" by J.K. Rowling and I am on page 210. The settings of my book are England and Hogwarts during the time period of the 1990's. If the book was placed in a different time then the story would have things such as future technology or past technology. If it was in a different place then maybe somethings in the story might change. This is what would happen if the setting of my books was different.

  48. I am reading "A Thunderous Whisper" by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and I am on page 232. The book is set in Guernica, Spain, and in the book it mentions this several times and this takes place around the first aerial Nazi bombing, during April 26, 1937. It also happens during the Spanish Civil War, and I know this because the main character's dad is drafted into the war. If the story had not taken place during the Spanish Civil War, the m.c.'s dad would not have been drafted, there would be no conflict, and she would never have met Mathias and become a spy.

  51. My book is "Zit Face" by Emily Howse and I'm on page 179. The main setting in this book is Dallas. So far Thats mostly where it takes place, for how much I've read. Except for, the main character Olivia and her sister go to Albuquerque to spend spring break with their dad and his girlfriend. The school that Olivia goes to is also located in Dallas. I know because it tells about where Olivia lives between pages 37-42. Also This book takes place in Olivia's 8th grade year and the summer of her freshman year of high school.

  53. My book is Will Grayson,Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan and I have finished reading it. This book took place in two different settings, because it was about two different people. One setting was Chigaco, Illinois and the other was another town in Illinois, not too far away. How you can tell this is so, is that the book mentioned that one Will Grayson is Chigaco, and that the other lives in a different city. If the settings were changed, the two Will Graysons may have never met each other. The distance between the two could be futher and make it almost impossible for them to meet. The settings are what give the story character and what affect the characters. If there was only one setting, it may have changed the plot of the book, by making the introducing of the Will Graysons less dramatic.

  56. I am reading Bone gap by Laura Ruby and I am on page 80. The setting of my book is a small rural town in Illinois. The story takes place in present day time. If the story took place anywhere else I don't think that it would make since because the point of the book is that everyone knows everyone since is is such a small town. The plot would change because the book wouldn't be as personal since the people in the book aren't as close.

  59. The book I just finished reading was called Death by Latte by Linda Gerber. The setting of my book is in Seattle the majority of the time but after a few chapters changes to somewhere in the mountins. In the book the main character, Aphra, describes Seattle to be a fast paced, busy, bright, largly populated, city. A distinct contrast to the mountins that she later describes as dark, cold, damp, and lonely. If the story took place somewhere else or in a different time the plot would change dramatically because all of the key elements would not exsist.

  62. I'm currently reading "Heat" by Mike Lupica and I'm on page 202. The setting takes place in a big city call the Bronx, New York. It takes place on modern 2000's and mostly takes place in Michael's apartment or on the local baseball diamond. I know this because Micheal plays baseball so he goes to the baseball diamond. If the story was in a different time like the early 1900's, Michael could've been a victim of segregation.

  65. My book is Heat by Mike Lupica and I am on page 158. The setting of my book is Bronx, New York and I know this because he talks about the Yankee stadium and said that he is from the Bronx. If the setting changed then Michael could not have been introduced to baseball and meet the people he has through baseball. Through baseball Michael was able to meet some life friends and learn some valuable lessons about life. If the setting changed Michael would probably be playing a different sport because of his athleticism.

  66. I am currently reading the book called Rules by author Cynthia Lord and I am on Page 178. The setting of my book takes place at the main characters house and at the occupational therapy that she takes her brother too because he is currently battling autism. I know that the story takes place in these two places because in the store this is where they are most of the time. I feel like if the story took place anywhere else then I feel like the kids wouldn't have to go through the neglect that they go through. I also think that maybe the child wouldn't have autism and we'd be talking about a whole different family.I also feel like it will take place and a different time period.

  71. The book I am currently reading is Scat by Carl Hiaasen and I am on page 200. The setting takes place in Florida. How I know this is that it says it in the book. Also it tells us about the environment in the book so it gives me clues where it is at. If the setting was different maybe they would of never went on the field trip and Mrs. Starch would of never went missing and there would probably be no conflict in the book. So I guess the setting is very important for the book to be a good story.

  73. I'm reading a book called Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and I'm on page 72. The setting is in a town in the future. That's also where and when the story takes place. I know, because there is an introduction to the book where it explains this. If the story took place in a different time, the plot might change. Everyone in the town might not be so distant from each other.

The setting of the story is set in the future. if the setting wasn't in the future the book would be a lot different because it would'nt have some of the things it has in the book which would change the book completely. Also if it were different and was in the time we had the book would be completly different. I'm enjoying this book so far.

  80. I'm currently reading John Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" ,and I'm currently on page 240. The setting of my book is in a fantasy world called Skandia and it takes place during a time where guns were not invented and people still fought with swords, and due t it being a fantasy I can't really know what time period it is exactly by year but I can guess what time in our world it is based on. The time period it seems to be based on is during the Middle Ages. If I it were to be based on a different time period it would be completely different because they could have guns and tanks ,and the whole story would be altered. The story might change by more deaths due to weaponry changes or more people surviving due to medical and technology improvements.

The story takes place in New York City in the year 2013. i know it takes place in that date and year because the book clearly states it. 85. The book I’m reading is the 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and I’m on page 352. The setting of the book is in either two places: a forest near a highway or in Camp Haven and the time is just modern day and fits whenever your reading it. If the setting was different, the plot would change because without Camp Haven, it has less space, which means more people in a room and a bigger team for the training they do. Without the forest, it may be by house and the aliens that are taking over the planet. If the time was different, it would make a lot change by the future making the humans be way more prepared and knowing and the past would make the humans panic even more and making the aliens job easier for taking over earth.

  95. I am reading Alex Rider by Anthony HoroWitz and I am on page 310. The setting of the book takes place in London where Alex Rider lives around 2015. If the setting of the book changed then most of the story would be changed. Most likely there won't be some crazed villain who fakes a charity and causes a mass disaster in Africa. The plot would change to something that wouldn't seem like a big effect to today's world.

  99. I am reading Hoot by Carl Hiaasen and I am on page 268. The setting is South Florida and a lot of the action centers on a vacant lot where a pancake house is going to be built. The time period is current. Even though the author doesn't identify the exact place in Florida he is talking about, it's clear from all of the description of the swampy conditions and the animals that live in South Florida that this is where the story is taking place. It's also clear that the time period is current because there is a lot of conflict between development and preservation of the land. If the story took place 100 years ago this conflict would not have been so evident. There was a lot more land that people had yet to try to develop for human use.

Then when he goes to college in Yale. Then he goes to john Hopkins medical school for his residency. Then when he gets called to separate his first pair of Siamese twins that is in Africa. Then when he retires he travels everywhere to speak at schools and churches. I think if he just stayed in one place his whole life he wouldn’t have had any opportunity’s to learn. 112. My book is called Were World Nest of Serpents by Curtis Jobling. My current page is 365 and the setting takes place in a sort of medieval time, i say this because the story includes swords, dragons, magic, and very little to no technology. The environment changes over the entire series such as the forest, volcanoes, mountains, and frozen tundra. Since the book revolves around animals and their habitats included. The plot would change completely if the setting changed because the plot would not make sense in another setting.

  117. I am currently reading "Pretty Ugly" by Karyn Langhorne Folan and I'm on page 55.My story takes place in California at a high-school called Bluford High. I know this story takes place at Bluford high because in my book one of the teachers makes a comments saying "... She's one of the best students I ever had at Bluford." This quote lets me know that the main character of my book attends Bluford so I knew the story was going to take place their. If my story took place in a different time or place it would affect the plot because themain conflict in the book takes place at Bluford High. If the setting was changed it would throw the whole book off.

And the time I know because it says December 2007.If the story took place in a different setting it would change the plot because a lot of things happened in place of a farm so how could you have this plot without their being a farm and the time frame because if you change the year you automatically change everything after that.

  123. The book I am reading is called Last Shot by John Feinstein. I am on page 58. The setting of my book is at the Final Four. What happens is that Chip Graber gets blackmailed and the only people who know are Susan Carol Anderson and Stevie Thomas. If the setting change then Stevie and Susan Carol would probably not be in a situation where they have to decide on whether to tell someone, write about it, or keep it a secret.

  124. The book I’m reading is Blood is thicker & the page I am currently is none I finished it. The Authors of my book is Paul Langan & D.M Blackwell. The setting of book were it took place is in Detroit at Hakeem Randall cousin house Savon. I know that because in the book he moves because his dad gets sick and his parent can no longer stay at Bluford high cause of the medical bills they have to pay. No I feel like the setting should be at a shelter or hospital because the father is sick and they lose their home. And if they would have changed it the plot would be different and interesting.

Right now I am currently reading The Giver and I'm on page 176. the setting of this book is a town that has been enclosed so It can be It's own perfect little town and be just the way the people in charge want it to be. This book takes place in the future, you can tell because it is very futuristic and has technology we don't have yet. If this book were to take place in an older time period the book wouldn't be able to have things the way they want it.

  129. The book I am reading is counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan and I’m on page 269. The setting of my book is Bakersfeild, California and in modern time. I know this because it says it is in California and it talks like modern day and has modern things like the middle school setting and such. If the setting was different, the story might be different. Like if they were somewhere that was too poor to have schools, then Willow wouldn’t have to worry about fitting in at school.

  143. I am currently reading 39 Clues by Rick Rodman and I am on page 52. This book takes place in modern America but there are some futuristic/ magic objects in this book. The place where most things occur is Alistair Oh's shop where he makes and sells his "life hack items". This is the main setting because Alistair Oh is the main person who helps them and makes gadgets for them. If the story took place somewhere else then they probably wouldn't have Alistair Oh or his gadgets to help them. That would result in incomplete missions and maybe death.

  144. Right now i'm reading The Grimm Conclusion by Adam Gidwitz and i'm on page 297. My book takes place in medieval or whenever Cinderella took place. I know because it's the Grim version of it, which is also known as the not-so-child appropriate. It is basically the same place and time as Cinderella but instead it's told differently. There is castles, knights, princes, and princesses. There was also some trading and extremely poor people. If the time changed everything would be different because it's acted out this way because of them being somewhat poor and built for working. Cinderella would never be a princess and she would never be saved by her prince.

  148. I finished reading my book, "An Abundance of Katherines". The setting of this novel is a small town called Gunshot, Tennessee in modern times. The setting is important to the story because the whole story revolves around a small town. Everybody knows everybody. If this weren't the setting, the story would have to be completely different and it would lose its whole local, small town, cozy vibe.

I think it takes place in the future. I know this because it talks about having electrical powers from a machine at birth. If the story took place in a different time period, like the past, I think the plot would change because the places would be named differently and they’d go to different landmarks.

  161. The book I have just read is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs and I am finished with the book. The beginning of the book takes place in the protagonist’s hometown of Englewood, Florida, but most of this book takes place called Cairnholm Island, a small island off the coast of Wales, UK. This book also splits between 2 different times, constantly splitting between present day and the loop of September 3rd, 1940. If this book took place at a different time, it will only change the peculiar children and their abilities as well as the reason for making the loop in question, and that’s it. Other than that, this book could take place in any 2 points in history.

Where the country is in another civil war and one side is struggling to fight a convict. I know this because of how the author described the plane crash situation. If the setting was in a different place it would be completely different because he probably could've found civilization way faster. And the book would've been boring and short.

  168. The book i finished reading was a series of unfortunate events and the author is lemony snicket. The setting of my book takes place in this horrid hospital. i know this because it describes what the hospital looks like and what kind of sickness the patients have. If the plot changed none of the horrid things that went on in the hospital wouldn't have happened. The kids wouldn't have had those kind of experiences.

  170. The book I am reading is “The Testing” by Joelle Charbonneau and I’m on page 130. My books setting takes place in a dystopian future. I know this because everything is different than the world is today and it seemed to be better in the past. There is a change in power and only few are selected to be successful. This changes the plot greatly because now that the world isn’t completely right, characters act and behave different.

  175. The book that I just finished is The Last Apprentice: Slither by Joseph Delaney. The setting of this book is The County and the time is around the 1100s. 176. The name of my book is Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb and I have already finished it. The setting of my book is Buenos Aires, Argentina during the late 1900's. I know this because at the time of Adolf Eichmann was living in Buenos Aires, Argentina and so was his family. If the pot took place somewhere else the story would be very different. If it took place in Germany in the past, present, or future we would have never been able to catch Adolf Eichmann. Had it taken place anywhere else, excluding the United States, it would have been impossible to catch him.

  179. The book I've just finished reading is The Giver by Lois Lowry and there were 225 pages. The setting in this story is pretty basic, it's colorless, it's like a happy town that is organized, everything is living and nothing dies. A lot of this is explained in the detail in the book, but the book doesn't talk about the time this story takes place in. I would guess that this time is either in the present day in a place that is secluded from today's lives, or in the future where the world thinks there's peace in organization and no memories. If this story took place in another time the plot wouldn't change much because it would most likely occur in a secluded place like in The Maze Runner. If someone like Jonas entered our culture, then I predict some people would go and investigate this secluded area.

  181. I have finished reading Spy School by Stuart Gibbs. The book is set in modern times because Ben the main character talks about how the school would've been like fifth-teen, twenty years ago from now. Ben also talks about how advanced the technology was from back then comparing what he was learning at the spy school. The author never really gave a place on where the school is located but it is known in a secret area where it used to be a detention center. I think if the book was set in a different time I think that the technology would be very different and the teaching would be very different.

  184. The book that I am currently reading is Divergent by Veronica Roth. The location of my book is a city in the united states far into the future. The way that I know this is that in the book the describe the sights that they see and this helps you know where they are. The way that you know its in the future is that many of the buildings and roads are overgrown and damaged by time. If the book took place in another time it would not work because the entire book is based around that time and what is going on.

I know this because the fight with hand weapons instead of guns. They also had people trying to conquer places in the book too. If this book place in any different time, it would definitely ruin the book. Because there would not be a same background story to each main characters life, and these backstories are really important to what the characters choices are in the future.

I know its the summer because Elinor, complains about the hot weather and temperatures. Also, Jessica, an amputee patient that has dreaded coming back to school. The book doesn't tell when or where the story takes place. It seems like it is in modern times, because she was in a hospital and she ran track. If this book took place in a different timeline like the early 19th century then Jessica would probably die.

  197. The book I'm reading is "Erak's Ransom," by John Flanagan and I'm on 45% through it. The setting of this book is currently in the desert. If it was somewhere like a grassy plain it wouldn't make sense because the main character is looking for his horse that ran away in a sand storm. This book is also in the past. This book is number 7 in the series, but number 7 took place before number 6. This book is in his childhood, whereas book 6 he was an adult. This plot would be much different if it wasn't back in time, the main character wouldn't be as unsure of himself.
